Contradictions within the Legion [LORE & SPOILERS]

Post » Sun Dec 11, 2011 12:37 pm

time for a more on topic post:

What I dont understand about the Legion is how the hell they built up the Legate's camp. I mean, that place is like 3 feet away from Hoover Dam, it gets kinda under my skin... The NCR just stood there and was like:
''Whaaaat? Girl, the Legate's camp isn't a threat to us girl, shoo.'' There are enough rangers watching over the Dam.. why can't they just send a pack of those to the Legate's camp?! And I dont believe it was like...

[NCR marches to Legate's camp while it's still under construction]
[Legate steps out of his tent and raises his arms and says ''HUDDA HUDDA HOO!'' and eats one of the rangers]
[NCR runs back like sissy little girls]

I just dont believe that that happened. The Legate's Camp is 3. friggin'. feet. away. from. Hoover. Dam. :|

I blame Gamebryo, since they had to use a sandbox map there was gonna be some things that felt cramped up.

I don't really see how it makes sense, dunno what a toletarian empire is though.

He meant Totalitarian. A all powerful State where people have no rights at all..just privileges allowed to them by the State. The most well known examples of a Totalitarian State are the Third Reich and Stalin's USSR.

The actual Roman Empire was a Monarchy pretending to be a Republic.

I dont really think this suits very well in the subject, but were discussing the lgion anyways so...
Im a the only that think that the devs could have made a better work on Ceasar? I dont know, he doesnt really feel like a "emperor" or a leader in his way to express himself. I know his sotry and all but I feel that Vulpes actually feel and talks like a leader.

And then there is the Legion person at Cottonwood, him and his men don't have a clue how to arm/disarm mines but the ones further north don't have any trouble setting mines.

If you are referring to the minefield between Forlorn Hope and Nelson, it was set by the BoS to protect the now abandoned bunker. It is listed as BoS Minefield on the official map.

How so? Julius Caesar was assassinated by a group of Senators who feared he would proclaim himself King. Augustus and his successors were careful to either hold the offices of the Republic that the emperor's power was based on, or make sure whover they appointed to them would do what they wanted. Augustus and his immediate successors were the most powerful Monarchs to ever exist.

Claims in-game that the legion are homophobes are probably NCR propaganda or ignorance. They are probably tolerant of homosixuality in the "Roman way" (as long as its kept private and you're the. . .top in the relationship ;))

But the period you described isn't the entire history of the Roman empire. It has been a republic (sort of) and a monarchy.

Rome did have a Empire before it had an Emperor...that is certainly true. But Caesar is aping Julius or Augustus, not the actual Republic. Julius was assassinated because it was feared he meant to be King. Augustus was King in all but name, he basically hid the true extent of his power behind the forms of the Republic he had usurped. He was able to get away with it because the major offices of the Republic were originally created to divide up the powers of the former Kings of Rome so one man could not exercise complete power. Augustus just arranged to have himself elected or appointed to them as necessary. Caesar is actually setting up a Fascist Dictatorship with a Roman Empire theme....the mechanics of his "Empire" have little to do with Rome at all.

Remember that in the actual Roman Empire, homosixuality was an expected outgrowth of the Roman culture that men are superior to women (which the Legion emulates). Men spent nearly all of their time in the company of other men, and women did the same with women. This was typical in many if not most Western cultures, but most of the other well-known ones were either Jewish, Christian, or Muslim, and homosixual intercourse was banned by all three. In the pagan Greek culture, "affection" between a man and a boy was often considered to be the best and highest form of sixual expression. It's hard for us to imagine today (and thank the Maker for that), but that's just how it was back then.

To respond to a previous statement, concerning who would ally themselves with the Legion, remember what Dale Barton said: the lawlessness that exists in New Vegas, and even in NCR territory, is unthinkable in Caesar's territory. Alcohol and chem use is banned, and raiders find themselves on crosses. Cruel and ruthless as they are, the Legion brings stability and security. I'm no friend of the Legion (their reliance on slavery, their treatment of women, and their murder of innocents see to that), but I understand why some would welcome them.
