Elemental Enchantments Negate Kill Animations?

Post » Sun Dec 11, 2011 3:54 pm

Sorry if this has already been posted here, but...

I recently enchanted my legendary daedric swords with both frost and shock damage. I was really excited for the extra damage (as one should be), because I had spent a lot of time leveling my enchanting skill to 100 to get the biggest damage increase I could. Upon finishing my enchantments, I saved the game and decided to test out my newly buffed weapons on the people of Whiterun. I quickly noticed that I was not seeing any of the highly entertaining kill animations I was getting fairly regularly with the swords before I enchanted them. And to be perfectly honest, I am very disappointed with that. The only reason I can think of that would cause this to happen is:
The kill animations happen when the game registers critical weapon damage, but the elemental enchantment damage registers first, so if that kills your enemy, no weapon damage is to be had. Thus, no kill animation.

Is anyone else having the same thing happen?
If so, I really hope that gets patched. Having stronger weapons is obviously a priority, but it would be nice to also see the kill animations with them.

Oh, and the sneak attack (throat slitting) animation with daggers still works if they're enchanted with elemental damage. *sigh*

I noticed this happen when I had a sword enchanted with fire damage; I did kill animations much less frequently because the enchantment would kill them, and not the weapon per se. This doesn't seem to be a problem with my absorb health enchanted sword though.

I'm also certain your skill with a weapon determines how often this happens too.

Didn't happen with me. I enchanted my sword with fire and shock and still got a ton of finisher animations. I'm on the 360.

Hm... odd. How powerful are the enchantments on your sword?

Enchanting doesn't change anything.

I've found that you're most likely to get a finisher when...

- the enemy is standing upright
- you are standing still
- you swing the weapon in your right hand (if you're dual-wielding)

Yeah I noticed that same pattern, as well. Before I enchanted the swords, I could walk up to a fruit stall vendor and decap him/her probably 75% of the time. But as soon as I enchanted them, I stopped seeing all kill moves entirely. I thought there might have been a connection there.

I constantly run Draugr through with my flaming ebony sword. No worries, I think you've just run into a spot of bad luck.

Oooh, I hope you are right, sir. I suppose I'll get back to playing now and hope to see some decaps again.

Ope... I started my game up and began killing random people in town to see if it would work... lo and behold, the brutality that is my dual-wielding prowess has returned in all its glory.

Thanks for the responses, everyone!

This would be news to me. I sometimes wish my kill animations would quit.

I really only have a problem with them when there are multiple enemies around.
