Smithing- did I do it wrong?

Post » Sun Dec 11, 2011 11:58 pm

Let me try to explain: As an archer-stealth based character, I was only interested in light armor so naturally went up the left side of the perk tree (light armor). I made it to 100, grabbed my dragon smithing perk, and was dismayed to realize that dragon weapons do not exist. Therefore, the best bow I can craft is glass.

Now, the Daedric bow is considerably more powerful than the Glass bow. I'm at a loss here. Basically, what I see is this: If I would have went up the heavy armor tree, I still would have made it to Dragon smithing, and I'd also have the ability to craft the Daedric bow. Since I went up the light armor tree and I'm at the dragon armor, all glass armor is now obselete. Basically, I screwed myself out of the ability to improve the best bow in the game to "Legendary." A Legendary Glass bow is still better than a "Flawless" Daedric bow, but a "Legendary" Daedric bow is better than either.

Anyone understand what I'm trying to say? What's up with this imbalance?

Can you not circle around the tree? It is a loop. I doubt the game would be that intuitive, but perhaps it is. Just a shot in the dark here, I haven't made it to 100 smithing. If you can't I'm sure there will be a mod for it.

What level are you? You can't just level up 4 more times to put perks in the right side as well?

The Daedric bow only does 4 more damage than the glass bow, you'll be fine.

You should be able to choose Daedric with your next perk because as another poster stated, it is a loop so you do not need to work your way up the right side too.

uhm you kinda messed up IMO because if you take the heavy armor path you get better weapons and you get the best light armor but its not something to start over about

Yep, shucks. A legendary glass bow is still a lot better than what any non-smith would ever find though, so you won't have any problems beating the game.

Nope, you must have ebony smithing to get daedric.

The disparity I saw was considerable, could that have to do with archery perks? (I remember seeing 15+ points)

@El Joe: yes, it looks like a loop, but I cannot go from Dragon to Daedric. Perhaps it's a bug, perhaps it's intended-- either way I can't do it.

@vandalx: I'm really OCD about perks. 4 more perks is HUGE, and I have plans to place them elsewhere.

Smiting is really easy to level. Just spam iron daggers and you can be at 100 in under 2 hours as long as you have the funds. Then deadric is one more trait to the right of dragon, since dragon has the best light armor set you will want it if you main light armor. Then its only one more point to invest to the right of dragon to get the best weapons and always gives you the option to switch to the best heavy armor later if you so choose.

Yes, I am pretty sure the difference is due to your +% bow damage bonus.

You cannot loop around the tree from dragon -> daedric. You need to go from ebony -> deadric.

If you are playing on the PC, you can use the console to add and remove perks. I would just take away the perks that lead up to glass, and give the perks that lead up to daedric. If you are on the console, you are sol.

I knew this before starting and I still stick with glass. I can sneak kill a draught deathlord in one shot, or kill one with 2 regular shots. That's powerful enough for me.

That's exactly the issue many players are talking about (the players that enjoy balanced design). There are already a few mods being planned to change this and make both sides of the tree more balanced. If you are on the PC, just have to wait a little more.

I'm afraid not, for I thought the same, however this isn't true.

There is another way to get a daedric bow that does not require smithing...

Spoiler
Search under the college... You can combine some items to make other items... I don't have the recipe yet but I know it exists...

The issue isn't so much in getting them but rather improving them.

IMO, the smithing should have been separated into weapons and armor, instead of materials with light and heavy armor. As a PC player I'll be waiting for a mod that does this after the release of the CK.

He already HAS it at 100. Up the light armor side of the tree. That's the point - he's got "max" Smithing, but is stuck with lower-grade weapons because he didn't go the Heavy Armor perk route. And, no - it's several more perks, not one, since you can't go from Dragon to Daedric.... you need to go up the whole right side of the constellation.

No you didnt do it wrong, only slightly. Yes if you want dragon armor you must go up the left side.

I did this too.

Now you want a daedric bow.

You now must simply level up more to put more perks into the right side of the tree.

You cannot go from dragon to daedric. You must go up the right side to get to it.

So yes, if you want both, you must do the WHOLE tree.

Yes, it svcks, but no, you can't go around Dragon to Daedric. While it's completely out of common sense that the best weapon is not available for both classes (the sheer laziness of artists makes no Dragon weapons are available), they chose to go like that. And the forced anvil shape doesn't help either

You didn't do it wrong, Bethesda designers did

heavy armor has "no weight perK" too. how is light armor different or better at that point? other than the damage-avoidance perk.

I personally find it silly and rediculous people power-leveling their smithing at really low levels to 100, for one your battle skills don't rise but yet leveling up by power leveling smithing makes enemies level up as well. Secondly there are mines all over skyrim as well as masses of ore veins in the open world, as well as tons of forest animals ( wolves elk bears ect) to easily get leather for strips. I had smithing to 100 by level 20'ish just by raiding dungeons and going to ore mines. Just my opinion.

IMO glass weapons should be as good as ebony weapons at least but not as good as daedric. Also there should be at least a few dragon bone weapons.
