The map.

The world map is really cool, and everything. It's just not as useful as the maps in Morrowind and Oblivion. It's way cool, except I can't see any roads to figure out the easiest way (i.e. no mountains) to get somewhere. You can never just go straight to the desired location the first time. Everywhere you go there is a great, bloody mountain that is impossible to climb. It's seems like anyway. And you look, and you can see green, and mountains on the map, but the freakin' clouds cover the way sometimes...and wtf? How am I getting a live satellite feed?

It's way cool and everything, but I would have rather had just a simple map with obvious roads, some little triangles to show there are mountains..that kind of stuff. The Empire has been in Skyrim a couple of thousand years now, hasn't it? SOMEONE must have drawn a map of the roads somewhere.

The map is terrible, and I already knew it when I saw it in the gameplay footage:
- showing no roads etc.
- you can't zoom out enough
- style not fitting that kind of game
- ugly mishy-mashy of clouds and snow

Can't wait to have a mod, which implements the paper-map.

I agree. Although I like the whole 3d model style map, I just wish they made some pathways, something simple like a black line, showing where the different roads are.

Yup, just waiting for a mod with:
lines on the 3d map marking roads
a paper map

dont worry, if things dont get fixed in a patch (or dlc) just wait for the CK, then the mods will start flooding in :celebration:

Oh right, of course. Brain fart. I remember the contruction kit wasn't released right away with Oblivion, but I think Morrowind shipped with it. Or maybe I just bought a later release of Morrowind

I hate to nitpick (but I'll do it anyway), but it's the Creation Kit. Oblivion had the Construction Set. :P

Not really fond of the current Google Earth style map either, I hope we'll be able to mod in another one.

I would seriously prefer a map similar to the one in Oblivion. I hope there's a mod for it soon.

I just don't need to know where the cloud coverage is or not to run into that huge mountain right there - although that can be useful - I'd prefer to know where the roads are. Also everything is the same color! I can't find my cursor half the time, and when I can then I can't find the place I'm trying to fast travel to.

Ah, but I didn't mean to start complaining so much. I'm just tired. I really do appreciate what Bethesda was going for. It just didn't work out so well for me, a legally blind gamer with a computer that lags terribly whenever I open the world map.

The 3D map, the perk constellations, etc all seem like style over substance taken to the extreme.

This is my major complaint too. I guess mods will have to add roads to the map for me

And some things in this game are a waste. No need for a 3d mad. No need for 3d items inventory. No need for that fancy perk chart with stars

Give me a paper doll in inventory, a detailed 2d map, and a perk chart thats easily readable

:D

Yeah me too, can't pull out far enough to see the entire map, so I end moving the map around for 2 or 3 minutes just trying to find Whiterun or Winterhaven, so I can store and sell stuff.

Yeah I hate the skills/perk thing too. I'd rather just see all of them listed at one time, in descending alphabetical order, with a drop down you can select to see the perk tree for each skill. You have to keep spinning that thing around and around to find what you are looking for.

I agree, that main game world is the only 3D I need. Everyting in the menus could be 2D.

I can't disagree with that. The map is very frustrating - I don't like the weird bullseye lens affect when you try to scan it, you can't zoom out enough to see the relative positions of the locations which makes it harder to plan a route (but that's been an ongoing problem with Elder Scrolls maps), and you can't zoom in enough when you need to. The snow and cloud layers don't add anything useful and are more often a hindrance. The local maps aren't always particularly helpful either - the level of detail isn't always easy to interpret and when details cross over one another it's a confusing mess - maps are supposed to be simple, easy to read tools designed to aid navigation. I'd much rather we could make use of the version we see in Whiterun Court Mage's room.

If you're on the PC, there's a mod floating about somewhere that lets you zoom in so you can actually see the area you're looking at as though you were there. That could be useful for you.

I think apart from the roads problem it's more useful than the paper map. I mean that paper map does a terrible job showing the shape of mountains and terrain, It looks like the summit is actually the same location both or something, but because the map is a 2D side view, it makes it very hard to tell where they start, and they are much larger than they appear. Also, some aren't shown at all.

This map would be good ... http://www.gameranx.com/img/11-Oct/skyrim-map-hd.jpg

You can also use the map you get with the game, and roleplay with it, as you are actually holding it ...

The 3D world map on the Skyrim Nexus is superb.

http://www.skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=145

Best part is that it only requires an ini file edit!

I am using the "limited" one which is just perfect. The full one disables interior maps from what I read.

Highly recommended.

Just so you realise, that map is basically an exact copy of the released map, it was made back when some had access to the map but we weren't allowed to share it on the forums.
