Oblivion Overhaul - Sounds & Graphics

Post » Sun Dec 11, 2011 4:20 pm

I have been asking for something like this for Oblivion a very long time, and today I learned that http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1177820-relz-morrowind-overhaul-sounds-graphics/ had done it for Morrowind.
I was so impressed that I actually went out and bought Morrowind! :)

Now that it has been proven that it can be done, anyone willing to try and do something similar for Oblivion? I would gladly help towards such a goal.

I play Morrowind as well as Oblivion, and I can tell you that in large part, that mod is a compilation of existing mods. It makes the installation easier, but at a glance there's nothing there that you couldn't achieve through installation of those mods individually (and indeed, the screenshots and video is basically exactly what my MW installation looks like, in spite of the fact I had never heard of this mod till I saw your link).

My point is, while there isn't an existing full "sound and graphics" overhaul package for Oblivion, there are certainly mods enough to overhaul the graphics and sound by installing them one at a time. Which also gives you the opportunity to pick and choose from mods that cover the same ground. As well, an overhaul mod like that quickly becomes outdated unless it's updated about as often as every individual mod that's part of the package.

This has been done for Oblivion, and there is a mod on File Planet--Oblivion Audio and Visual Overhaul 2. The biggest problem is do you make it work for BAIN and OBMM, and playable by somone with a lower end PC.
I use FCOM, and I am already hitting the limits of my processors and available RAM, and am very cautious on trying to add this type of mod and still keep my Load Order playable.

Nice.. but all i could think as i read up on what that was all about.....Hmmm its probably already outdated! As the modders here are always improving there work and updating ,this would be a Nightmare, as then when a user has a problem ,there asking for help with a mod that has been updated and they don't know because they didn't read the readme for the 200 or so mods they installed with a Click!

It is working with the Unique landscapes tho..I just get the UL Compilation as its been up to Date. Is a BAIN package, has the Patches, and I always install all.
Just my thoughts..

Indeed, it's not a good idea to get compilation mods that draw from disparate sources and are not kept up-to-date. You're always better off installing things one at a time. It's pretty much inevitable something will go wrong at some point and when it does you'll have no idea where to begin troubleshooting it. Get mods individually! It's more fun!

I respectfully disagree.
There are many like myself who find the installation process rather difficult.

The key point here is about providing more options to people - what is so bad about them having the option of downloading a compilation mod? Some suggest it may become outdated etc - but that could be remedied rather easily with an update every 6 months. Those who want to customize their installs, and prefer the latest version of every mod right away can still do so... I think its a win-win scenario for everyone, - just consider the popularity of http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1177820-relz-morrowind-overhaul-sounds-graphics/page__st__60.

Actually, it looks like the developer of the Morrowind Compilation Mod may do something similar for Oblivion:

LOL, if you ever do such a Overhaul for Oblivion, I will give it a second chance.

Haha, yeah that would be great too.
Anyway will finish Morrowind before to do that.

Just do a forum search for compilation. The reasons against far outweigh the positives, at least among this forum's members, and have been stated ad infinitum already. I don't think it's a discussion we need to have again...

As for 'prefer the latest version of every mod', that just rubs me the wrong way. It's not about preference - you should always, always use the latest version of a piece of (free, to avoid arguments over cost and worth) software unless it absolutely breaks something because mods are updated for good reason, mostly to fix bugs. I don't know why anyone would rather use a bug-riddled product over an improved version if there were no regressions, which there rarely are. :stare:

As for popularity, I couldn't care less. How many times have we all seen popular choices made instead of the right (or best) ones? They are very rarely the same thing.

I think that the Overhaul made for morrowind is something fantastic and everyone uses it not only because of its quality but you have to know that no1 is making morrowind mods or updating them anymore(at least, from what I know). If you want to play a "graphically/technically" modern Oblivion, you have to see the reccomended lists and search on tesnexus/planetelderscrolls;you won't be disappointed.

I just want to say that this statement is completely false. There are countless on-going projects for Morrowind, and the community there is almost as large as this one.

That's not true about nobody making Morrowind mods anymore. Just check the Morrowind mods forum, planetelderscrolls and tesnexus. Not quite as much activity as with Oblivion but mods are still being updated and new retexture mods released. The team behind the project though is doing a great job keepin git up to date. Just look at the release notes for patch 1.1 and what's to be included in patch 1.2. Look at how many mods from the original release of the Overhaul are being updated.

That's the big thing though. I would love if someone were to do this for Oblivion. It would make reinstalling the game so much easier and I wouldn't have to have 100 files lying around on my external drive that I'd have to reinstall. I remember the old Oblivion overhaul that was released a year or so ago but its really outdated. The big problem though is some people prefer QTP3 while other people prefer Vibrant Textures (me) and then there's the redimized, reduced, etc. versions of QTP3, and QTP3 iteself is a MASSIVE download. The big different between OB and MW is that for MW there's a TON of graphics overhauls to choose from, and the Morrowind Overhaul does a great job of compiling all the most lore-friendly graphics replacers for those who want to stick close to the lore. Oblivion has more gameplay overhauls to choose from.

I'm launching a website soon that's specifically focused on compiling all of Oblivion's aesthetic (and immersive) enhancements into http://i53.tinypic.com/4g28ef.jpg for easy downloading. Basically so no one has to do the extensive searching I did to improve my Oblivion. But you'll still have to download everything individually, heh.

Sounds great! Be sure to start a thread about it so we can all be enlightened :)

I like your technical diagram. Is that how the site will look? :P

Actually, that would be pretty neat, having a site like a paint drawing...

Actually, it looks something like http://img816.imageshack.us/img816/884/longpage.jpg. ...tentatively (I trashed the first design, never underestimate the power of sudden inspiration lololol. but actually i've used that template so much already filling things up that going back now would be a pain - though all of the images being used for design elements are not final versions ie. badly tiling background). Yes, it's so fancy that when you mouseover one of the links in the navigation the text highlight is not merely a solid color but a transparent solid color png you can see the background image through!!!! Amazing!!!! The list of categories I linked is just a mockup of how to organize it all on the main page. I am design-obsessed?

Anyway, I'm totally trying to put your list of environment mods out of business. Incidentally. Nothing personal! But watch out!!!!!! :teehee:
