How do you top it?

Post » Mon Dec 12, 2011 4:42 am

I know Skyrim is still fresh out of the box but after playing it for awhile I couldn't help but wonder.....TESVI....can they do it? How do you top awesome game mechanics like shouts? How do you top a story with DRAGONS......Could this be the end of TES? Will the next one be able to top the expectations set by Skyrim from a story/mechanic point? What are your thoughts?

To be honest I don't even think Dragons topped Oblivion Gates as an overall "thing". A lot of people will disagree with me though purely because Dragons are the new thing.

Regarding mechanics, there's A LOT of things that need improvement. They need to overhaul entire skill trees, that is if they decide to keep the perk system. As for story... You know, TES was incredible before dragons came, it will be just as great when they're gone.

And shouts are not mechanics, just so you know.

In Morrowind, you were a God-slayer. I think that game wins on the "Epic scale."

I''m not disagreeing because dragons are apparently the thing now, I am because I hated the oblivion gates.

I still think Oblivion Gates as an idea is better than dragons. It's just that the execution was so poor no one could enjoy it. Skyrim just had more polish than Oblivion ever did.

The 'OMG Cool' factor has to increase game-by-game until you have Conan the Barbarian fighting dragons with machine guns. So the next thing will be guns.

Some good points. God-slayer sounds pretty awesome. I agree the execution on the oblivion environment could have been much better also. However I do so love dragon slaying.

For me it does. I grew up on P&P and a dragon at the bottom of the dungeon in some ancient cave is what I will always hold most epic. Personally, I didn't like Oblivion gates. They felt far more tedious and way too similar. I like having a dragon surprise me out in the wilderness. It's an adrenaline rush for me.

This is the way I feel about it also. Dragons just feel most epic to me so far and I don't know where you might go from there with a fantasy RPG.

Oblivion Gates did have a poor implementation but as a concept I think they were much better than Dragons, which are one of the most overdone things in fantasy. I just don't see how anyone can view Dragons as being the ultimate idea/concept in the fantasy genre with how much it's done.

The return of the all consuming......(dun dun dun DUUUUNNNN) Mudcrab empire. BHUWHAHAHAHA.
(and as replacement for dragons there will be huge mudcrabs with whole dungeons within thier shell)

on a serious note, wouldn't it be great if there is something more mysterious thatn dragons and oblivion gates, like lords of death, taking thier victims when they least expect. and you get to fight em time to time, and then also whole conspiracies revolving around em. kinda like deus ex, just in TES style.

I did also feel they were badly implemented but what surprised me the most is how weakly they were improved by the modding community. It seemed that in Oblivion most everyone over-looked Oblivion gates and there were the hub of the main storyline. I think Oblivion and its gates might have played a more interesting role in Oblivion had also included some kind of player dichotomy. As opposed to one only for the scenery. Like in Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver where Raziel can shift between the worlds.

I don't know. I do agree though that they were badly implemented but the only way I personally would like them more is if they also had dragons :P

Shouts are nothing more than a gimmick to me. Magic repackaged. In fact, i'd go as far as to say it was a terrible idea.

Dragons are disappointing. I find them more of an annoyance than anything else. They're too frequent, and not difficult enough.

By excluding these two features, TESVI will already be making a step in the right direction.

Uhm, in Morrowind you were a reincarnated, god-killing...immortal demi-god.

Yeah, there's no toping that.

How to top Dragons? Giant GodofWar-like boss enemies. How about fighting a giant sea serpent in Black Marsh? A giant colossus in Elsweyr?

Combine soldiers.
Or gameplay that focuses on intelligence and skill to the utmost and ignores story and decoration completely.
