Is it possible to give armour to a follow for them to wear or other stat items etc?

Yes it is, just trade with your follower and give them better armor/weapons. if it's better than what he/she is wearing she/he will auto-equip the better item.

I recommend only generic or enchanted items. I've now lost two artifacts through my companion because she was disarmed and didn't retrieve them after. It's my fault really I should have learned after the first incident to remove the second item.

I gave Lydia elven armour but she won't wear it, I'm guessing her default is heavy and elven is light might be the reason.

Possibly. I gave her improved and enchanted glass to wear and she put it on. I tend to think they use what is best in their inventory. If NPCs have their own skill levels then I imagine she is probably trained in Heavy.

To go even further with this, has anyone tried to see if it possible to pick pocket better armor on to NPC's?

Also reason why Lydia will not equip some armor is if that armor has has a lower defence rating. If you want her to wear better stuff try improving it past the armor she is wearing.

Given that this is still the same Gamebryo that powered Oblivion, Fallout 3 and New Vegas, it's probably possible. You'd have to leave the cell and enter it again, to force a reload: the target character should then wear the armor you PLANTED on him.

Note: This process is called PLANTING items. Not pickpocketing, not reverse-pickpocketing, PLANTING items.

They sadly only look at armor rating, which is the highest is the one they'll equip.

The exception are mages I believe.

Planting, that's the one. I was struggling to think what it was called. :P I will have to try that then. :hubbahubba:
