Mage stone will level your skills faster.

Lord Stone will give you 50 points of damage resistance and 25% magical resistance.

Atronach will give you 50 extra Points of Magicka, 50% Absorb spells, -50% Magicka regen.
(the -50% magicka regen is negligable because of cost reduction gear and magicka regen gear you will undoubtedly be wearing. 50% absorb and 50 extra points of magicka are way better than regen in this game if you ask me.)

I would pick Lord Stone or Atronach at higher levels once you flesh out your base skills and perk trees.

in combat magic regen doesn't really matter.

From what I read, combat magicka regeneration rate is 1/3 of what its normal rate is. So if that is true, yes it does matter. If it is untrue… I apologize, someone must have stole my sweetrole.

Also don't forget about the Apprentice Stone I think it is (not 100% sure) but one stone gives you a plus 100% boost to magicka regen. Add that with some basic magicka regen gear (75%) and the two perks from the resto tree (50% total, 25% a piece) then you'll be regenning like a pro! but the downside to the stone is you gain a 50% weakness to magic I believe. So this stone is good in my opinion only if you're finding yourself going out of magicka quickly in battles and need an extra boost and can handle mages well.

Lord or Atronarch.

Don't pick apprentice the regen is barely noticable unless you use the regen-mod; and magick mobs will tear you to shreds.

If you're a Breton, then the magic mobs that are barely even existing will be less of a problem. The way I handled them (Breton & Apprentice Stone) was to dish out some fireballs at long range and have my atronachs be the first line of offense. It works decently well enough so long as you dong do charging head first into any of their spells like a Nord would do ... :P. But as you are new I don't recommend trying this stone because if you don't know how to handle them efficiently by kiting and using certain spells to your advantage, they will tear you to shreds. Maybe give this stone a chance when you are more experienced in mage like combat. Good luck man!

I love the fact we can have this discussion because stones can be chaned at any time now. Much cooler in my opinion. Plus I like to discover them all.

Lord or Atronach. Atronach is easier to get earlier in game and the - 50% is negated by simple mage robes you find on low level mobs. Another good one for early game could be steed, the extra carrying capacity and the ability to ignore heavy armor penalties are good for helping early mages survive.
