Assassin tips?

Post » Mon Dec 12, 2011 2:06 pm

I played through the game in about ~50 hours as a mage on the middle difficulty. I thought it was quite easy and wasn't satisfied.
I didn't do an incredible amount of quests because I wanted to make a new character.
I made a Khajiit assassin/archer/thief/ect... on master difficulty.
I am at level 13 right now, and am starting to have a lot of difficulty.
I cannot solo dragons (at all) they completely demolish me.
I am dying to random wanderers when traveling (random bandit attacks, vampires).
I'm pretty much just looking for some tips to make the game a little easier for me, I am a newcomer to the Elder Scroll series, and would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks!

Hah. If you think that's hard, play an assassin/thief who doesn't use archery. :P
I understand that's not helpful but sadly I don't have any advice to give.

OH also forgot, should I be dual weilding daggers or just using a single one?
Are there any specific places I should go to that would give bonuses to my type of character?

Daggers are great for one shot stealth kills but their damage output is very low for fighting toe to toe warrior style. Personally I use daggers once I got the x15 damage perk. Before that I was dual swords.

Make sure your gear doesn't svck. Get +dmg, +armor enchants. Use poisons. Get the multiplier perks. All pretty simple stuff really.

you'll get decent gear if you do the thief guild and dark brotherhood quest lines.

If you have not yet begun the Dark Brotherhood or Thief's Guild factions quest-lines, I'd suggest looking into those, the gear sets you receive from these will provide you good starting gear and also serve as a template if you decide to eventually make/enchant your own.

At level 13 you are likely don't have enough tools to deal with dragons alone, I'd suggest try to use the environment to your advantages or hire sellswords to fight for you. e.g. lure the dragons to other mobs

if you insist to fight, grab some potions such as invisibility, magic resistance, paralysis or you can avoid the encounter and pay them back when you are higher level.

Uh, not for an assassin. The DB armor has better base stats plus the gloves give you x6 archery damage and x30 dagger damage. I'm level 37 and still rolling with it.

Oh you mean the double backstab gloves? Do those work with bows? I thought they only worked on backstabs?

Regardless, the rest of the kit svcks. It's all got a little destruction, or a little bow, or a little sneak, or a little illusion. Nothing really worthwhile. Whereas the end-stage thief armor has pretty much the best AC in the game.

The gloves apply to bows as well. You also, if you do a sidequest (which is hard at lower levels BTW) given as a reward during the DB questline, get an Ancient version of the armor that outclasses the thief armor significantly. I did the DB early (lvl 15 or so) and just finished the Theives Guild at level 35 and the Ancient DB armor is still stronger. If your going stealth assassin the DB armor is better. The only problem with Ancient armor is the gloves only apply to backstabs and not bows so I still roll with the standard gloves.

Of course if you're not playing an evil character, there's always the option of wiping out the Dark Brotherhood.

This man speaks the truth. a Thief/Assassin on Master level without Alchemy is, first of all boring, then suicidal.

From the breakdown I saw, the NG armor has the best AC in the game per level.

This is true, though you still have to commit a murder first. Also, I'm not sure if that locks you out of getting the Ancient Shrouded Armor. I don't believe it would as you can always still go to where it is, but it may only appear there if you do the DB quests. I'm not sure.

Until your sneak gets really high or until you have a horse, explore the world during the day at your own risk! If you are running around during the day, I'd advise always always always have a companion with you at low levels. On master difficulty mobs like sabre cats, bears, snow bears are hellacious if they jump you.

As for dragons, as strong as assassins can be in dungeons, dragons are their major weakness especially if you aren't an archer. Just try and keep your alchemy up to create strong poisons and pluck away at them with a bow and let the poison do the work until he is forced to land.

Really? That's odd and not at all what I've experienced. Keep in mind I upgraded both through smithing and Ancient Shrouded is better. The only thing I can think of is that, because the only perk I took in smithing was the one that allows you upgrade magic items, I'm better at upgrading leather armor than whatever NG is. It takes void salts to upgrade so I'm not sure what it is. Either way, if you're going stealth assassin the gloves from the DB set are a must have in my opinion.

Just looked up the two armors' stats out of curiosity. The NG is 69 and the Ancient Shrouded is 72 base. Oddly, the NG armor itself is 1 higher than the ASA, the hoods are the same and ASA gloves and boots are 2 higher than the NG. Apparently the NG armor rating doesn't scale, only it's enchantments do. The ASA armor doesn't scale at all so, though it's not easy to get, it's the strongest light armor you could get early in the game by a long shot (without smithing of course).
