Why do they keep making games obnoxiously bright?

Post » Mon Dec 12, 2011 5:20 am

It's not a huge issue for a PC user, recently installed a mod that didn't even necessarily have anything to do with darkness, but as a side effect of other visual improvements also ended up making nights and dungeons and so on darker. Walking to Riverwood and up to Bleak Falls Barrow at night I actually found myself not so weighed down by the tedium of repeating the beginning quests that as an OCD character builder, I'd done so many times due to frequent restarts. I was soaking up the atmosphere and realizing just how flat the game's nights and "dark" areas used to be before.

Is it a game play concern that Beth has or something? Are they worried we'll dislike not being able to see very well at night? Just bring back Morrowind's carry-able lanterns IMO...

Ya... very few games actually have a night/dark system. The lack of night immersion in games really puts me off when comparing to how beautiful daylight is.

Yeah, the game isn't actually dark enough to need Night Eye spells or torches or lanterns or anything. Between ambient light and stuff on the walls, you're fine unless your opponent goes chameleon, which would cause you trouble during the day as well.

Agreed. However, I think days are too dark. Well, only the side of the character not facing the sun. At noon, the shadowed side of the player is WAY too dark. Increasing the brightness only makes everything around the player look bad, since it is fine to begin with. A little peeve.

Really? I have a hard time at night and in dark dungeons. *shrugs* To each their own I guess. Perhaps your gamma settings and such are way higher than mine.

I agree that this is a major design flaw. They should patch this if possible (I am on PS3, and I don't have PC.).

I want my gameplay to force me into using a torch or light spell. Otherwise, why even have them?!? I put three torches into my first character's inventory at level 5, thinking that I will need them later. Lo' and Behold, 60 hours later and level 35 those same three torches are still in my inventory and unused. I had been going into alot of dungeons as well. In fact that was all I was doing.

Draugr do not need lanterns, torches, and bonfires lighting their passages, do they?. I want to be in a very dark room in a barrow. I want it so dark that all I can see are ten little glowing blue eyes coming at me. Please, for the love of TES, fix this Bethesda.... please?

Can't you just turn the brightness down? Not trolling or anything it's a genuine question. I use torches quite often in dungeons.

Or are you talking about the level of darkness outdoors not being realistic enough? Because i'd agree with that, it is unrealisticly ( ) light outside at night (considering there's no streetlights). But it's like that on most games.

?

If you are NOT complaining about bright areas being too bright and dark areas being too dark, adjust your freaking gamma!

If you ARE complaining about afore-mentioned, i too am open to suggestions..

Yeah, I'm good with the light levels. Just as I was in Oblivion and FO3.

So you can actually see?

That too. :)

No, turning brightness down makes the days worse. It also makes what lights there are in dark areas just look off. The problem is the game's default range of light to dark is just very narrow.

Default game settings, and on a monitor w/brightness set to 0. Granted it's a fairly bright IPS monitor.
