Owning a House...

Post » Mon Dec 12, 2011 7:30 am

First of all, I know the best way to 'own' something is to buy it -- or, well, unless it's an item... why buy when you can steal? But In this case, I'm talking about homes.

I already own a home in Whiterun with all the 'upgrades', but while out on a quest to Swindler's Den (and being chased a good distance by giants and mammoths, omfg), I came across a place called "Drelas' Cottage".
The guy inside immediately attacked me when I entered, so I killed him. He had a nice set-up going on in there, and I was wondering if, since he's dead, could I take over the place without worry of my items disappearing after a while? I liked the idea of being away from the town, and I hate the chick that follows you around after you become "Thane" in Whiterun. I suppose I could just kill her, but I'd rather not if I can avoid it.

So... yes or no? Will my stuff 'poof' if I leave it in Drelas' Cottage?
Or is the place mine for the taking?

Put something minor in like a barrel or something, wait a couple days, then check the barrel again. If your stuff is gone, it's not safe, if it's there, try again, just in case. :P

More thank likely the stuff will disappear. But yeah, do as 1st response said and check for safe storage first.

So you found Drelas Cottage like me ?? Amazing.

I was wandering around, then i found a House out of nowhere.... It was night and it was raining, so i tought i could go inside and stay there for a while, and be friendly with who live there.. But it turned out that Drelas was a Dunmer Mage and started to attack me ! I was like: FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU. Then i killed him.. that was a weird moment... lol

Free Shacks

There are several empty shacks around Skyrim, which contain a bed and a few non respawning containers.
Alchemist's Shack, has two barrels and an endtable for containers. Also has the benefit of an alchemy lab.
Meeko's Shack, has a barrel and an endtable for containers.
Riverside Shack, this page has more details:
Abandoned Shack, this is where you take part in the initiation of the dark brotherhood
Traitor's Post, has two wardrobes and a cupboard that you can store items in. The chest there resets along with the bandits.

It's not on the list, but then the game has only been out for a very short length of time. Stick a worthless item you'll remember in each container, and then leave for a game fortnight. Come back, and check which ones have disappeared.

usually places like that will respawn, so I would assume that you cannot safely store stuff there..unfortunately.

I wish ownership would go away like they said it would.

Aye. I've found so many nice places where I've evicted the current owners and would love to live there. Also if you could do that, I would love to hire some personal guard for me and my wife. That would be ultimate.

Hopefully it's just broken or can be added later in a patch. Hopefully...

I guess I'll try what Cronox and Muzzy suggested, to see what happens. In the mean time I'll keep using Breezehome, in Whiterun.
Really miss the ability to claim any home as my own, like in ES3 (Morrowind).

Same, I wish consoles had mods.

Yeah, if that doesn't work sorry, Breezehome is a nice place though. :D

Place a cup or something in a container see if it disappears or place several cups in all containers this is what I do. See if they disappear. Do not hold your breath I doubt you can have any house that you cannot already buy... :sadvaultboy:

Thought the same thing till I found out the commands to drop in items like an enchanter table and forge, etc wherever I wanted. Saves hours of time just running and warping to the same places and makes just about anywhere home 8)

What are the console commands and item codes for some of these things? Have you also found a code to spawn a safe storage container?
