Textures BSA caused silent crash at game load

Post » Mon Dec 12, 2011 12:18 pm

Hi all,

So I've just spent the last hour or so debugging my entire Oblivion setup because the game was crashing silently. Everything appeared normal in the OBSE logs, and regenerating the Oblivion.ini did nothing either. Eventually, I narrowed it down to the Textures BSA. I kind of picked it out after narrowing the issue down to the original BSAs when I noticed that the BSA's size looked like it might of been over 2GB. But why now? It was working before. I'm sure the only thing that has touched that BSA is Wrye Bash. Could someone else tell me what size the uncompressed BSA is? I'm just really confused and frustrated right now...

Yeah, that's what mine was I think. I wonder what pushed Oblivion over the edge... GAH! I'm repacking the thing now. Hopefully, Oblivion will go back to being nice after that...

Thanks for the replies guys.

How's that? Accordingly to file properties, mine is 1.217.817.848 bytes. I have to add that mine is named Oblivion - Textures - Compressed.bsa, it might be a peculiarity of the Steam version.

It's repacked uncompressed, i.e. the bsa is unpacked and repacked but with no compression. Have had no issues whatsoever with it.

Does it speed up loading times?

In theory, yes, but I haven't noticed any difference in practice. Guess it depends on the rig - mine is basically made up of bottle necks.

--reduces stuttering, so I guess, yes, that's probably why. I've got the exact same numbers as Arkngt after repacking again.

Thanks again!

2,020,963 kb is probably JUST short of the size limit.

That's what I thought when I picked it out, ha-ha.
