Any place to buy a downloadable version?

Post » Sun Oct 18, 2009 3:46 am

Are there any places that sell a downloadable version of the Game of the Year edition? I basically want to buy a download rather than a disc for three reasons.

1. I can play it tonight, not in three weeks.

2. I don't have to pay for shipping

3. I don't have to use a disc.

So basically, is is possible to buy a downloadable version, or is this game disc only?

Pretty sure you can get it off Steam.

edit: Yep, just checked. $20 on Steam. It'll probably take a few hours to download though.

Do you know for sure? I don't have Steam and I don't want to download something I don't currently use.

EDIT: I checked their website, and they have it, but I can't create an account. It keeps saying account creation failed.

Download Steam then create one once you have it, that should work.

GOTY is also available on Impulse. (identical to Steam, but it's an option)

With Impulse once the game is downloaded you don't ever, EVER need it on to play, while Steam you have to have on, and some people had problems playing Morrowind because of Steam. Also alot of mods from what I read don't work because of Steam. Get Impulse, I find it so much better than Steam.

*edit* I didn't know you could get it on Impulse.

Steam doesn't have to be on and you don't have to be on line, this is a configuration option. Also, I play the Steam version with no problems. The only thing is that you have to redate the BSA's for some mods to work, not a big deal.

Now when you say Steam doesn' thave to be on, is that for Morrowind only? I know for other games, like Civ V, Steam has to be on or you can't play. While you can be in "Offline" mode, Steam still has to be on.

Maybe Morrowind is the exception then.

Some games require an active internet connection but it is not due to Steam, it's part of the game itself. When you're off line, I'm not sure what you mean by Steam having to be on. Anyway, I can say that Morrowind doesn't require any active connections as far as I know since I've played it under all sorts of conditions including off-line.

edit: I understand that Steam can seem intrusive and can be an extra layer that may not be desirable and that you may want to do without it. However, they often have really good sales and provide disk-free play. I personally have not found them to be a problem and welcome the chance to buy games like MW , Oblivion, or Witcher for under $10 on sale and get rid of the need to have a disk in my drive. I think some people worry too much about it.

What I mean is, you have to have Steam on to play games. While Steam can be set to "offline" mode, Steam still has to be on. I can't speak for Morrowind, but if I want to play Civ V, and I don't have Steam on, As soon as I double click my Civ V Icon, Steam comes on, and then Civ V loads. From what I am told all Steam games do this. Even if Steam is off, it will come on in order for your game to play. I just assumed it was for Steam Morrowind as well.

Thing about Steam is, you have to be "online" before you can set it to "offline". I tried this and I couldn't play my games, because Steam wouldn't go offline and said it needed to be online in order to go offline. Go figure eh? When I tried to put Steam online I couldn't. I ended up uninstalling it, and reinstalling it again. Now I have it offline again. If it wil not go online again, then I will not bother with it anymore. I am not trying to say Steam is bad, but saying you don't need Steam on in order to play games is wrong. For most Steam games, Steam has to be on. Yes it can be set for "offline" mode so you don't need an interente access, but Steam still has to be on.

Again, for Morrowind I don't know, but the games I have played, it had to be on. If I shut Steam down, before the game loaded, the game would not load up and I coudldn't play it.

Hmm... you have a point there; I hadn't thought about that. Well, I'm sorry you're having a bad time with it.

DO NOT BUY FROM STEAM!
Sorry for caps, but it's for emphasis.
Steam is easily the worst place to buy games from online, period. They have terrible customer support, their games and their game's directories are wack, and honestly, you'd be better off walking to Wal-Mart or Target and buying the GOTY Box Set. Sorry for telling you to go to the store and be social (know how internet addicts hate that o.O) but Steam just svcks.

I don't agree with this. I've used steam successfully for all kinds of games, and rarely had issues. For example, I had a copy of KOTOR that I couldn't get to work with Vista, bought KOTOR for $4 on steam (on sale) and got to play it no problem. Same with Morrowind. I used to keep the discs around wherever I went, from computer to computer. Now I bought a Steam version and I have it wherever I go in about half an hour. I've never had any issues with their support, except for a glitch (since fixed) with Company of Heroes.

Steam is great for old games like Morrowind because most compatibility issues are ironed out. Steam is even better for newer games (like CSS at the time [although then I hated it, now I appreciate it]) because it keeps everyone on the same page without relying on people themselves to download the patches. It's a huge help.

I can't recommend Impulse. They seem to encrypt their games, so software like Oblivion Script Extender doesn't work for the Impulse version of Oblivion. Maybe it's the same for Morrowind, and you'll have trouble running MGE or MWSE.

Steam has an offline mode, and if you want support for the game, that's what those forums are for.

One problem with the Steam version is that it doesn't come with the Construction Set, which is sort of a bummer.

Is it possible to get the Construction Set online? I have my CD version, but I'm just curious.
