Question for you Water Coolers

Post » Mon Dec 12, 2011 9:42 pm

I'm newbie at water cooling - thinking about setting up a loop or two. I have a Haf X case, p8p67 deluxe mobo, gtx 570 (x2) sli, i7 2600k. I was thinking about just starting with cpu watercooling - but i definately want to expand to both gpu's eventually. Can/should this be done with only 1 loop?
Here is what i'm thinking - let me know your thoughts
1. 360mm radiator mounted in top
2. dual bay xspc res/pump combo in front 2 drive bays
3. heatkiller rev 3.0 cpu water block

Will I be able to add #2 gpu water blocks in the future with this same setup? would my loop go like this?:
pump>cpu>gpu1>gpu2>rad>res/pump. Or do i need have two loops with this setup? Thanks!

I have the HAF-X (photo in my profile) running with a 1090T and 2 HD6870's in xfire. 360 Rad is top mounted with 1850 GT's running through an Apogee cpu block and full cover EK's. Coolant housed in single bay XSPC res and a Laing D5 variable pump with a silver killcoil to keep the nasties at bay.
My loop is Res>Pump>Rad>cpu>gpu's>.
Had the cpu running over 4Ghz with the cards @ 1000/1150 with no heat problems.
No doubt the Intel will run hotter than my AMD, but I reckon what you have will do the job.

Thanks, Nice rig BTW. Im thinking bout going blue/green colors. Am I hurting myself by getting res/pump combo? should i go with separate res and pump - for a better pump - I just like the idea of the cleanliness of res/pump combo.

Also are you still able to use the front top 2 drive bays with that 360 rad installed? right now I have the usb 3.0 (that i never use) and an optical in the top 2.

Personally I would go with separate Pump/Res set-up if it were me. The MCP655 is about the most solid and reliable pumps out there with the best flow rate. Granted many others may have stronger pumps, but for reliability you cannot beat a MCP655 pump.

Many great reservoirs out there, make sure it has a good seal or solid acrylic style casting to avoid potential leaks.

My build log if interested:

Good luck with your water cooling. I can say once I went water cooling, I will never go back to air for my machines.

With the 360 I have, I am not able to use the top bay because the radiator is a thicker version (about 50mm I think). With the fan on it, there is just not enough clearance.
I was thinking of going with a res/pump on my next build. Not sure yet though. I find that mine is fairly clean looking anyway.
Here's a better shot;

I drilled holes through the fan shroud and the bottom cover to allow the coolant hose a straighter run to the pump.
AFAIK, the Laing is the same pump as the MCP655. Could be wrong though.

@The1STCAV I really, really like those heatkiller gpu blocks "hole edition" - would go nicely with the heatkiller cpu block - except i cant find them anywhere, there all sold out :(, do those gpu blocks have connections on top and bottom - and you just use whichever fits the best?

@xcrimson is that some sort of direct connection from your 1st gpu block to your second gpu block? (like a gpu passthrough or something? Also what exact kind of 360 rad you got - so it only takes up 1 drive bay space - not 2? - I could live with that.

after seeing those pics i think i'm just gonna drop some dough and go with both gpu blocks too :P i need to find those "hole edition" blocks though

Thanks for the help!

I bought the Rad 2nd hand, although the guy had not actually used it. He couldn't remember the brand and it is not marked, but it looks like an XSPC Rad. It is basically just a double depth Rad.
The attachment between the two EK-FC blocks on the gpu's is a telescoping fitting. You can buy them in two different sizes depending on how far apart the PCI-ex slots are.
I'm at work atm, but when I get home I will search for a link on them.
Make sure you get compression fittings too. They look a whole lot better, but are about $AU10 each.

Yea thanks! I was originally going to go with barbs and hose clamps but everywhere I look everyone says compression fittings look a lot better and work better so i guess i should go with those.
