Seal him up in the vault. Not only do you avoid fighting him and the turrets altogether, but you can also get a head start on the ticking timebomb around your neck.

Delt with him like all my other problems I Fallout. Explosives. Lots of Explosives.

I chased him around the outside of the vault pumping round after round of .308 into his skull. Then I got my head exploded. Damn.

Took me a few tries to kill him and get out alive. But it was completely worth it.

Trap him in the vault, and get 36 gold bars

I personally prefer aiding Elijah though.

He missed with his first shot and he couldn't last long enough against an auto rifle continuously firing in his face to reload.

Sneak past him with all 37 Gold bars in tow. Nothing says "look at my middle finger" like stealing 37 Gold bars right from under someone's nose.
