Feedback wanted: Underdark Mods

Post » Mon Dec 12, 2011 8:25 pm

The title is fairly self-expanatory. I'm looking for feedback from people who've used them on any of the handful of mods adding an "Underdark" to Tamriel. I'm also interested in mods that add a similar extensive cave system but may not use the name, and would appreciate having any such mod brought to my attention.

Particularly, I'd like to know about the following aspects of any such mod you may have played:

1. Lore-friendliness - Is the mod lore-friendly, to TES lore? I consider the incorporation of some locations from other works to be somewhat lore-unfriendly, but not terribly so. However, if it makes major references to well-known characters or other non-TES lore such as races and items/artifacts, that goes well into the lore-unfriendly realm in my eyes.

2. Completeness - Is the mod finished, functional, and does it contain respawning enemies throughout its' tunnel systems?

3. Size - I'd prefer an impressively large tunnel system worthy of the name "Underdark". How does the mod you've played stack up?

4. Overall Quality - Was the mod good? Did you enjoy playing it or consider it a "keeper" for your game?

Thanks, any responses are highly appreciated!

Note that I haven't played thehttp://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=23153 since around the time viconia episode 2 came out. When I played it the undderdark seemed.... okay, but seemed rather empy, excessively large and arduous, way too dark in some areas (yeah dark is in the name, but I'm talking I couldn't really see anything with night eye, and a 300 foot light spell), there was no sense of direction, stability, or uniformity. it's like a humongous mole on PCP just went to town under neath the earth. I understand that it's meant to kind of be "hardcoe" in terms of darkness, dungeon crawling, not for humans or whatever, but it's done to the point where it's no fun. It's like if there was a game that was a realistic simulation of you being dropped in the middle of nowhere in the middle east. It might look nice, but eventually you'd get tired of seeing sand, sand, sand, and having no idea where you're going and everything.

As for lore.... it really breaks lore, what with the whole Drow stuff, and everything. Completeness, can't really say. Size... pretty big, but not much in there besides the flora and such. I recall 1 or 2 enemies every 3000 yards or so.

There's also http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=30279 canols; which is basically an extensive root system under the Shivering Isles. I enjoyed that one more, it was much more organized, more enemies to fight and stuff. Overall just a lot more fun, and it felt like a useful mod as well. Like if there anyone ever made an Enhanced Daedric Invasion type mod for SI where the Order invasion made the place much more deadly then the root system would be a cool way to get around and avoid the main threat above.

Thanks Phoenix! I didn't know about the Shivering Isles Root System mod, looks very interesting. I'm definitely going to try that. I also appreciate the feedback on the Northdark mod.

I'm still looking for differing opinions of that mod, and/or feedback on other mods. Particularly http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=36101, which looks promising despite the fact that it's billed as an homage to the works of R.A. Salvatore. It certainly uses names from his books but from the comments it's just a giant cave system with enemies but no friendly NPCs, which would suit me fine.

I'm going to bump this just once to see if anymore feedback is forthcoming on any relevant mods. Thanks in advance to anyone else who pipes in!

I've played thru the underdark and unless you're playing one of the quest mods that require the underdark it's not really worth the time effort and space needed to load it. If you want to play the Viconia mod or one of the other quest mods it's necissary to have TRON loaded. Viconia is a great play but the underdark itself is a confusing jumble no matter how you play. Compass direction doesn't work there nor are there any map markers that make sense. All in all it's still beta and has potential but I think they were a bit too ambitious with the size and it wasn't stitched togeter in any coherent maner.
