What do first time elder scrolls players think of skyrim?

Post » Tue Dec 13, 2011 1:36 pm

is it just me or are these first time players a lot more eloquent and decent in their posts than most people you see one here
they form complete sentences and there's even paragraphs and everything
probably just the 2l;dr generation and their hate for walls of text or something XD

First timer here. Only RPG I"ve ever played was old school Zelda games.

I'm enjoying the game but there are parts I don't like. Most of the quests seem repetitive (companion, civil war etc). I wish the quest journal was better organized. I can't discern between the main quests, major guild quests and misc quests.

This is my first TES game. I bought it on the strength of Fallout 3, which I played all summer and thoroughly enjoyed. Overall, the Skyrim experience is awesome. Dungeon crawling in Skyrim is everything I could have hoped for back in my teens when I was playing the newly-released AD&D around the dining room table and later playing Wizardry on the Apple ][. Having said that, I am a bit disappointed that there are no character stats on offer. Strength, agility, dexterity, charisma... in my mind these are the "R" in "RPG". I guess it does make the learning curve too steep for newbies. The one follower limit seems stingy. As the "hero" in an RPG, I would like to feel like I am leading a small army or a finely honed team into the bowels of the most foul dungeon. In other RPGs, part of the "R" and a lot of the "P" is selecting and equipping followers for your party. In Wizardry I had different party members depending on what I was doing for mission (loot, kill boss, recover corpse of fallen party member, etc). In Skyrim, I'd enjoy getting a couple of archers, another tank warror and a couple of mages partied up and kicking monster ass in some cave.

I've been playing Skyrim with no technical issues since it released. I had one CTD in the first few minutes that evidently was fixed by adjusting my system sound settings. There are a few rough edges in the game, but the "Wow!" moments more than make up for them. I'm shocked by the serious bugs introduced by the 1.2 patch, so I'm just going to stop playing until the next patch. I haven't played Shogun 2 Total War yet, so that will keep me busy for the next month.

TL;DR: I'm enjoying it, I wish there was more depth to the role playing (e.g. stats and followers), I didn't have any technical problems, I'm going to take a break until the next patch. ;)

Going to quote someone who pretty much sums it up

Mechanically, as with Fallout 3 (also my first Fallout game) I find it generally weak, as a seasoned veteran of a couple decades worth of fantasy games. Being a primarily combat-based game, level progression seems kind of wonky when it comes to non-combat skills; there's entire skill trees that are useless (pickpocketing, lockpicking); crafting seems oddly grindy especially for a single player game, although I'm no stranger to the grind; dragons are...not at all challenging at any level of play, adding yet another game to the giant list of fantasy games that have TERRIBLE and disrespected dragons; roleplay seems incredibly limiting due to limited options on how to deal with situations, virtually any more-strict 'class' and persona type thing locks you out of a ton of content so it just seems like a thief/rogue game through and through despite trying to present options; keep sieging is hugely lackluster; encouraging quicksave/quickload spam is bad; and why in all of hell does pickpocketing cap at 90%.

As has been beaten to death on this forum already with all its arguments and counter-arguments, balance is waaaaaaaaaaaaay off in a lot of areas. Again, being a veteran gamer, I'm well on the side of "I'm not going to do anything that intentionally weakens my character, so the world needs to rise up and match my power." The power of some perks is just crazy. In honesty, all this pvssyr about mages being under-powered is weird, because they seem like the only thing that's at the *right* power level while other stuff is pretty overpowered by a significant margin. [edit 2: Yes I play on Master.]

Combat is very bland, voice acting is horrible, UI/Input makes combat more stat based then skill based. But an absolutely amazing world I want to invest in...if only Bethesda allowed me too :(.

This is my first game in the ES series. I've had a 2nd hand copy of Oblivion in my hand and been tempted to buy it several times since '07 when I got my xbox, but there were always newer games which grabbed my attention. I played a lot of Fallout 3, and I thought Skyrim would make improvements on that - it did, and then some!

so apparently everyone loves the lore. Nice to know.

Hopefully everyone's reading the in-game books

There are two things I always steal when possible: gold, and books. I will be reading those once I get a house, build myself a library.

i thinks its pretty much the funnest video game i've played. and the crazy thing is there is much room for improvement. i think the first thing that could be improved is having a wider variety of armor and weapons. kind of like Diablo 2. sure you can where anything you want but seems like there is only really one efficient setup for mages. havent played as warrior yet.

Ditto. There is a lot of room for improvement. Personally, I've already started wondering about the possible addition of polearms. That would also instantly be a possible new skill to level and Perks to add, unless you would file them under two-handers, but they'd likely play very differently from the current two-handers.

I'm enjoying the game but there are parts I don't like. Most of the quests seem repetitive (companion, civil war etc). I wish the quest journal was better organized. I can't discern between the main quests, major guild quests and misc quests.

It does seem a little random how the quests are organized yes. Some quests that seem really minor to me ended up NOT going under the Misc quests, while Companion/Thieves' quests ended up under Misc.

The one follower limit seems stingy. As the "hero" in an RPG, I would like to feel like I am leading a small army or a finely honed team into the bowels of the most foul dungeon. In other RPGs, part of the "R" and a lot of the "P" is selecting and equipping followers for your party. In Skyrim, I'd enjoy getting a couple of archers, another tank warror and a couple of mages partied up and kicking monster ass in some cave.

Yanno, I haven't been playing with a follower by my side at all, but this sounds like a great idea! Just as long as those followers don't die too quickly, no matter the level you're at. I don't miss the Str/Dex/Cha of DnD and the like though. Being a frequent DnD player and DM, I actually really like that they are not included (though Stamina sort of covers Str, as well as Con checks). If they end up including the option to take more followers along with you, I'll probably end up taking along a healer and some tanky warriors while I can go sneak about and pick them off with my bow.

Me too, First time Elder Scrolls player.
I'm a Fallout fan.
And that's what this game feels like or should I actually say, I see where Fallout came from.
Even the lock pick game is the exact same..
And no V.A.T.S., but you still get slow-mo kills.

See, they weren't lying when they said Fallout wouldn't be "Oblivion with Guns"....turns out it was "Skyrim with Guns"

It seems almost every new comer loves this game, not many games can do that, i mean i remember how i loved the first dragon age but when i played dragon age 2 i was like " ok i think 2hrs is enough, time to uninstall this" .It was the same with mass effect i really loved the 1st one it had the best music i have heard in a game for a long time , the planet exploration everything was not seen in any game, than mass effect 2 came out i liked too but not as much as the 1st one because they made it from rpg into almost pure 3rd person shooter, i am glad Skyrim is true to its roots even tho i got a bit bored from it ( i wish i haven't finished the main quest)

Only thing I've noticed is that people who are new to the series tend to side with the stormcloaks, while experienced players side mostly with the empire. Wich is a fun phenomenon.

Oh wow, now that IS fascinating! Makes me want to look deeper into the history before I make my decision...

I think it's only 70% complete. I think it was rushed out to meet the catchy release date of 11-11-11.

I play a game like Arkham City and say, "Wow, what a clean, polished, complete game this is." While it's a different game, Betheseda could take note of their level of quality to that game.

But what do I know, the Skyrim lovers on this forum have about the same amount of logic as dragons flying backwards.

I have Arkham City. Great game but not fair for you to compare the polish. Arkham City is not really open world and its still rather linear. Skyrim has bugs, but what other studios do you know that make more polished games on this scale? Skyrim dwarfs Arkham City and for me there is a trade off. You cant expect them to work on the game for 7 years
