Pickaxes have to support enchantments because of the Notched Pickaxe which improves Smithing and causes shock damage.

I was running around dual wielding pick axes and it's great for mining. Instead of watching that slow animation, just hack and slash at the ore.

If you enchant it with fire, you can smelt the ore as you mine it.
