Sparing Dean

I was just playing Dead Money. I got to the part where you confront Dean. I was wondering if it is possible to let him live. If so, how do I do it?

Whether you have to confront Dean or not depends on past dialogue choices you've made with him from as early when you first meet him. He's an extremely touchy guy so if you say even one thing that he might consider rude or offensive to him, you will have to fight him.

Correct. Even things like Barter speech checks will upset him and make him fight you later. I believe he's even upset when you open a Secret Stash when he's with you. Not sure about that one though.

You have to kiss his ass at every opportunity.

You must act to be obedient and dumb from very beginning. Immediately agree to help him without question during the first time you meet him, MUST NOT insult him, MUST NOT piss him, MUST NOT act smart( pass skill check option ) in front of him and follow whatever he request is the safest way.

What a fragile and pity ghoul... :P

I don't think it's as a clear-cut as not passing skill check options, I certainly did that on my latest game and still got the peaceful way out with Dean. But yeah, like the other dialogue options, you shouldn't choose the ones that could be considered rude to him.

Dead is an evil evil evil person who considers you a svcker he's going to play to steal the loot of the Sierra Madre.

I'm surprised so many players WANT to spare him.

I agree! The only companion that I actively tried to save other than Dog was Christine (who I wound up having to kill anyways). I was rather satisfied when I blew Dean's head off :chaos:

Evil? Not really, he just a guy who cannot let go his envy. I'm glad I spared him because he does show some conscience at the ending.

Never threaten him. Never insult him. And just agree to be his partner when he suggests it.

If you threatened him to make him do his part in Strike Up the Band? You'll have no choice but to kill him later. Bite the bullet and take the long route of activating the holograms for his protection.

Opening his stashes won't turn him against you, neither will passing the Explosives skill check when you first meet him.

I thought the explosive one would piss him off, you never know with somebody who has the amazing ability to be offended by darn near everything. So I avoided most of his speech checks to be safe. Good to know some are okay to use at least.

Despite previously mentioned easily bruised ego I found Dean to be quite awesome. I enjoyed his sense of humor and pinch of old world class that is also horribly, horribly scummy at the same time. The mussed up tuxedo was also a nice touch. I keep them all alive because quite simply if I can avoid it murder just ain't my way. From what I can remember Dean wasn't an outright [censored] to me except on the initial meeting, I mean by the end of the whole thing we were bank robber buddies! Only I got away with everything and he didn't! Hah!

When you do meet up with Dean at the Tampico, you can act all smart ass you want(using repair skills, science, whatever.)

I think it's pretty sad though, Dean has spent the last 200 years trying to break into the Sierra Madre, but all that awaits him is his just desserts.

I kind of like Dean. He has this way about him. The way he speaks. So, eloquent. Barring that, I plan on feeding all three companions .308 from the "BAR" (I have a mod). Oh, and the fact that post patch somehow Raul and Cass made it with me to the Sierra Madre I'll have no qualms about killing all of the DM companions at the end. The extra firepower is quite helpful and Raul still has the missile launcher I gave to him in the Mojave.

Dean's actually impressed if you pass the explosives check. Personally I never had a problem sparing anyone, execpt Dog/God the first time through as my speech wasn't high enough.

I think its BS, the only way I found possible to help Dog/God is through Speech. Utter Bull [censored]! You can act all nice to Christine and be a doormat for Dean, but noooooo you need Speech for Dog! Speech is nice, but an alternative option is always nice!!

Mutilating someone's vocal cords isn't evil?
I'm surprised his karma is neutral.

The impression I had from Dean was that some of his actions are evil, while he himself is not. He is extremely insecure. He felt like he was standing in Sinclair's shadow, and let that control his life.
Keep in mind he has been waiting and planning in the Villa for 200 years. That's how important it is to him, and he is willing to do anything to get back at Sinclair while Sinclair hasn't even explicitly done anything to Dean, and will never even know what happens in the casino. It's very sad, really. Cutting Christine's vocal cords, planting a shaped charge in a cushion just in case someone like the Courier came along, trying to kill the Courier when he's afraid the Courier might betray him.

It all seems evil, and is to a certain extent, but he is so consumed by his envy and insecurity that he does these things despite his fair nature. It's really sad, and if anyone should have a chance to 'let go' and 'begin again', it's Dean. That's how I feel anyway.
