Look at the Gameplay menu when you open your journal.

You'll find all the relevant settings there.

However, I don't think there's an option to turn off just the compass, only all of the HUD.

Open Journal > System > Settings > Gameplay and Display

Dunno about compas, but I know that TM turns entire HUD off.

I am pretty sure there is a console command for compass, but if you just want to remove quest markers uncheck all your quests

[Interface]

bShowCompass=0 ( usually a 1 as default, 0 will turn it off )

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Location: (for me)
Documents / My Games / Skyrim / SkyrimPrefs.ini
I use the Steam version but did not see this line in the main folder with the other ini file.
