well after viewing the brink interviews i really think they should change the idea of the story telling while waiting for other players. resistance 2 tried it and it does not work 1 bit. instead it would be a nice idea to be able to free roam the map you are about to play on with the other people in the lobby at that time. just to explore a little while you wait and really brush up your SMART skills before the match.

just remember this is just my idea. i have seen it work on alot of games and for me it makes up for that idiot called loading. i have also found out that splash damage said they are not changing anything else about the game so maybe this can pass and maybe not. please keep the posts within topic and i dont want people flaming each other on this one(you all know who you are).
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------edit: after reading your posts i understand why this idea would not work. so instead ill just enjoy the clip and fiddle with my character in the loading process. thank you all for the feedback.

You would have to load the freeroam map , that would take about the same time as it takes to load a campaign match. This would only double the loading time and you would always get cutoff right when you don't expect it, If you want to freeroam play campaign on easy.

i see what he means, kind of like what they did with Red Dead Redemption. Wile you wait for the game to load, all the characters are in a small central area, about 30 by 30 feet where you can do different actions like smoke fight and look at the weapons/customize your character

i doubt he means that, and anyways, in brink you can look at the weapons and customize your character aswell=/

I disagree. Those loading screens are only really applicable in campaign where that 30 second clip is the background to the map your about to face. Its skippable and you can spend your time customizing your character instead.

Exacta. I see this is a bit counterproductive.

Its like Unreal Championship, right after the match starts you can roam around with a hovering camera, not too hard to do. But I like what Brink is doing.

ok people seem to be getting a little mixed up so im gonna name a game. the new mx.vs atv (forgot what its called). it had a point where your in this area waiting for enough players so the race can start. and you would see the other players free ride as you would. it had jumps and ramps and a little track. another game i can kind of relate this too is fifa 2010. everytime beforea game would start to load you went into a empty field with a ball and a goal keeper to practise your shots while it loaded. so for brink i would assume it would have a small area where you could practise some stuff with your team while you wait for more players to join the lobby and start the game. i hope this clears things up a little.

but.. one's soccer, other's race...
and i doubt it's while the game loads, so it would just take up more time(and people have been complaining about the waiting already)

rofl no, this would be a terrible idea. It would easily ramp up the loading times. The cinematic idea that theyre using right now is perfect. Its a small 30 second clip (literally like 2 seconds to load that) and while THATS playing, its loading in the background. Once the map is done loading, it should offer you to keep watching or skip it. People wine and complain about this usually because they dont understand that the game is still loading while your watching this cinematic, and when its done loading you can move on. People dont get the concept that your not going to be doing anything during this time anyways. I dont blame most people, since most devs did the dumb thing by loading a video, sometimes FORCING you to watch it, and only THEN, after the video, load the game.

A counter argument for when people realize this, is that "oh, but watching the same clip over and over will get old" ... so what you'd rather stare at some static jpgs? okay... cuz THAT'll be entertaining right? Or you could have some lousy minigame that generally gets old faster then a blank screen and a loading bar...

I can understand having something for you to do POST loading if you dont want to watch the cut, but i'm 99% sure that while waiting on others is the time you'll be staring at your guy and customizing him and readying your load out... But anything that would put on additional wait times, in my book, is unacceptable. The only worthwhile interactive loading screen i've EVER seen was in bayonetta, because while waiting you could practice your combo's. It didnt add much at all to the loading time since everything was already there, but i dont see this as a viable option in BRINK since practicing much of anything would require an environment, which you would have to either waste valuable memory to keep it always loaded, or load it post combat, increase loading times. Also it would weigh down on the CPU, further increasing loading times.

No. The light weight cinematic will be plenty enough. It'll keep you moderately entertained while serving a purpose, all with out adding any unnecessary loading.

The anime is Darker than Black. My avatar is from there as well.

On Topic: I agree with Chaos. Better to watch a little clip while the map loads then wait for it to load a mini-map to play on while it loads the real map. Also, I'm pretty sure that while the cinematic is going on you can either watch or spend that time tweaking your character, or your guns, or whatever. The cutscene is just the background. Besides, there's really no other way for them to put a story in Brink. They could add cutscenes into the middle of the matches, but that would be really annoying. Or they could not have any cutscenes at all, which would pretty much kill the storytelling aspect entirely. I like the system they've got now.

oh, and don't forget you'll see your character be awesome in those clips, and you'll have a chance to look at the char's of other people and "rate" them

SHOOP DA WHOOP!!!

lol i'm sry that was off topic.... somethin to contribute something to contribute.... thiiiiink... AH HA!

Yea, i remember that they said somethin about using the player characters in the cutscenes. Which actually makes me think... but as long as theyre all pre-rendered (which they should be, your about to be playing with them) it wont be an issue.

The devs did say somewhere that they wanted to give you every chance in the world to gawk at your badass...

Yeah, but I like to show off my knowledge of things I like to show off my knowledge of. Anime, mostly, but also video game info on occasion, although I'm usually on the receiving end there. :homestar:

And the above posters bring up a good point: I definitely want to see my characters in full cinematic glory, being awesome and stuff. :disguise:

Campaign is Co-Op and Multiplayer... AT THE SAME TIME

"Play on a private server with AI on Easy mode" would be more fitting.

You can play single player without having to worry about random people joining. Hence playing the campaign on easy for freeroam.

i dont think its that bad of an idea. i like the story-telling idea better. also that is only for the campaign.

oh and SMART doesnt require any skill. thats the whole point of having it in the game

Well loading is kind of necessary. So you would rather watch a loading screen than this?

You hit it on the button, thats exactly what he meant. same as in assassins creed, just have like a 3k poly scene where u can try out diferent smart manuvers really quick. not hard to do, small map to load (on any console, shouldnt even take a second to load up.)

OP its completly possible, just depends on if the devs want it or not
