Who else thinks GOTY is stupid?

Post » Tue Dec 13, 2011 4:22 am

I know this doesn't really relate to Skyrim much.

But seriously, pretty much every big release is given game of the year, there should be ONE game of the year, not about 10.

Your opinions?

Lol I didn't even know there were more than one game of the years. I guess I don't pay much attention to "gaming politics" these days.

I didn't realise that either.

If there was one GOTY, then that would be cool.

They normally only release one GOTY edition per year, but a lot more are given GOTY.

The thing is, how are a myriad of different companies going to come together to agree on a GOTY? A worldwide GOTY conference? That would take too long and would be pointless. Everyone has their own GOTY. Leave it at that and let certain good games get their accolades. Because, lets be honest, some games are superior to others in certain aspects.

Traditionally each magazine and reviewing website has its own Game of the Year. In most cases, in non-platform exclusive magazines, GotY is usually mirrored among them.

I believe what is held as the official Game of the Year however is the VGA GotY voted on by a panel.

There are too many GOTY versions of games in the recent years for there to only ever be one a year so I caught onto this awhile ago, but yeah I agree, one and only one GOTY award would be interesting.

If they didn't have multiple GOTYs, Skyrim would never win a GOTY and everyone would complain.

It hurts, but it's the truth. In a world with one GOTY - Skyrim probably doesn't crack the top 3.

It's dumb that like each magazine has their own GOTYs. I guess it makes them feel important and have more to write about.

Anyway...
Yeah, a SINGLE GOTY would be nice. Never gonna happen though so pointless discussion really.

Each service and or pulbication has the opportunity to call whatever game they want the GOTY. It's up to the consumer to decide if it matters at all.

I know some people that will only recognize places like gamespy or g4tv etc. But all one needs to do is look at any number of non mainstream sites and they all give out their GOTY award to somebody too.

And the funnier thing to me is that some smaller non AAA titles will gladly accept GOTY from whobangedmygame.org.can.momma.com and print it on their boxes as the title is a GOTY.

Yeah its silly not just because there are so many GOTY but because its generally based on marketing/hype rather than actual quality of the game.

Is there some huge sanctioning body like for film theres the Oscars, and winning one means something.

So which is considered the 'Oscar' of GOTY giver outers?

It's just an advertising gimmick, doesn't mean anything. (And then there's the part where.... say there was one GotY. Say it goes to a game in a genre you don't care about. Look, it doesn't matter to YOU, any more than the Best Picture Oscar going to some movie that you couldn't care less about. Buy the games you like, having fancy labels stuck on them doesn't change them - they're still the same games. And the opposite is true too - I don't need my choice in games/movies/whatever validated by having some faceless committee drop a statue on it.)

Well, those smaller non-AAA titles sometimes are more deserving of a GOTY than true AAA titles - but the heavy hitters like TES, Modern Warfare, Halo, Zelda, etc tend to win purely on name alone.. So if I was the little guy, I'd print GOTY on my game box too if someone gave it to me.

There isn't one. And good riddance. The academy as of late for movies and such has been a joke anyway. We don't need a similar panel of people giving awards to games that may not deserve it.

I suppose one could see G4TV as the Video Game Oscars, but they really are (at least in my opinion) a joke anyway, but at least the public votes rather than a closed body like the Oscars.

About as meaningless, really, as all those mags that come up with "Car of the year."

What I've never understood is why so many people on here get all excited about it. What difference does it make to me if Skyrim does or doesn't win someone's GOTY?
