Spell absorb vs spell resist?

Post » Tue Dec 13, 2011 5:15 pm

Is 50% spell absorption better than 50% magicka resist? How does this work? Is it 50% chance to absorb the entirety of spell damage with absorb or does it absorb 50% damage of all spells?

Which is better for someone just looking to negate as much spell damage as possible. I'm trying to choose between the Atronach or Lord stone because I'm getting murdered by mages.

Are you mainly a spell user ? Than absorbtion is probably better where as I prefer magic resist for armor based classes.

Magic absorb replenishes mana. Resistance lessens the damage

However, I'm not sure if absorb changes the damage dealt by the spell.

Spell Absorption is a percentage chance to activate. If it succeeds, the spell does no damage and replenishes magicka instead. If it fails, the spell causes full damage. Spell Absorption is very powerful, but it's an all-or-nothing.

Magic Resistance cuts the magnitude of hostile spells that hit you, or the duration if the spell has no magnitude. This is always active and will apply to any hostile spell, provided you didn't already absorb it.

Spell absorption is currently glitched and has its full chance to absorb and summons you cast.

the 50% in spell absorption is the CHANCE to absorb the whole spell.

- All resistances (magic, elemental, physical) cap at 85%, absorb at 80%.
- Magic resistance will reduce spelldamage first, then the elemental resistance will reduce what gets through.
- Absorb is an avoid-all-or-nothing effect (so 80% absorb means that you'll completely ignore 4 out of 5 spells cast at you). It will also make you ignore magical effects, such as the slow done by frost spells. Magic resistance won't do that.

As mentioned, absorb is bugged and will cause some of your own spells to fizzle, such as summons and others.

Cool, thanks. So it's a choice between 50% all or nothing chance of a spell hitting me or a 25% resistance to all spell damage with the either the Atronach or Lord. That's a tough choice but seeing as I don't use magicka much as a warrior guy, the Lord might be better.

Yes. The Lord also provides 50 armor, but that only equals a tiny 6% combat damage mitigation. If the spell absorption wasn't eating my summons I'd use atronach all the way. For now I just use Lord. If you don't use summons though, atronach is a clear winner.
