How to survive as a 2h wielder on expert+?

Post » Tue Dec 13, 2011 6:26 pm

On my first character I went sword and board, and it was alright as I could get defensive when the masses got onto me, and on my second character I was a healer/sword wielder, which helped when things didnt go the way I expected. However, every time I switched to a 2h weapon and my health would get low, I found I was quite at a standstill/defeat lest I use potions or ran away. How is one suppose to survive as a 2h wielder on the higher difficulties? Is there any trick to it? Blocking with a weapon isnt really that effective and often does more harm than if you just strike back.

And you wont be killing everything with 1 hit either. Any tips on this? Using heavy armor would prove very dangerous as it will slow you down at the early levels, therefore preventing any chance of escaping an unwanted situation, resulting in death

Two Handed, You need heavy armour.
Your purpose is to deal damage and pain.
Find anything that says "...Of Sure grip" and use it.
Skyforge steel is also a good weapon for early levels.

I played a 2h using Nord up to level 20 so I am sure I can teach you something.

Make sure to power attack whenever possible. Power attacks are far more powerful than a normal slash and are great. Stock up on some stamina to make sure you can spam those power attacks. Make sure to move around when swinging your 2hander. You are not immoable. If you see someone about to hit you with a power attack either move out of the way our bash them with your weapon(Do this by blocking with it then hitting the attack botton). Use heavy armor. If your getting beat retreat and heal up fully before running back and kicking more ass. Close the distance quickly between you and an range attacker. You are weak VS range attacks so kill those guys first.

Thats all I can think of off the top of my head.

Step 1: Strap on a crap load of heavy armour, boost your defence further with the Lord Stone, grab some amulets/rings/gloves that either increase your HP/Def/2-handed damage.
Step 2: Find an enemy.
Step 3: Bum rush thine enemy with while working yourself into a frenzy with a bellowing warcry.
Step 4: Layest into yon enemy's cranium with great vigour and enthusiasm.
Step 5: Shouldst his Hitpoints run out before thine own, thou wilt have secured'th victory!! (seems to work for me)
Step 6: Having survived the encounter, butcher the english language on an internet forum.

Limiting yourself to just one playstyle will bring you in trouble on the higher difficulties (see: Destruction mage whining). Keep a 1hander + shield and a bow handy.

Craft your own gear and plan ahead a bit. For instance, having a full suit of dwarven plate early will help you a lot. You can get your hand on quite some dwemer junk if you know where to look.

Use alchemy, enchanting or illusion for frenzy, paralyze and fear effects. Remember to use your daily powers (battle shout, berserker rage, dragon skin etc).

Alright so heavy armor it is. Though I still think 2h is very vulnerable to say, mages amongst a group and those that move around all the time (annoying as heck) guess its just a matter of how you deal with them, might hide behind a rock then rush at em afterwards.

Be careful of Frost mages.
They will slow you down and drain your stamina.
Potions of frost resist are advised.

If you have trouble with things moving, I suggest employing some frost magic to slow down their movement speed.

What I did was level my archery too. That way if enemies are attacking you from afar you don't have to risk running all the way towards them and get killed, but rather you can kill them from a distance.

Learning to dodge helps alot too when trying to close the gap. Arrows, ice spikes, etc. Will Ferrel said it all when he was running from a T-Rex... SERPENTINE!! SERPENTINE!!

Just "finished' a 2H character on expert. After a few unsucessful attempts at building one I ignored the 2H perks until about level 15 and just boosted Block and HA. Worked for my play style of stick and move. Health is also more important at early levels than stamina imo since potions are scarace (unless youre an alchemist).

Edit: Level 15? Might have been level 10. Anyway I always perked HA and Block first.

My two-hand warrior nord is level 41 now on Master difficulty. It's entirely possible, but you have to have a good setup. Heavy armor is practically essential. If you get into a situation where you need healing, try to put some distance between you and the enemy and heal with both hands. FUSRODAH is one great means of doing that, as are other shouts such as whirlwind sprint. Most of the time, your up-front damage dealing capabilities will be your defense. For this playstyle, a good offense is a good defense. Two handed weapons excel at staggering enemies. Close distance quickly and take as little damage as you can through dodging and/or speed. Immediately perform some sort of power attack to stagger. Follow up with as many swings as you can manage before performing another staggering powerattack. If you're forced to retreat, use backwards powerattacks. They allow you to continue backwards while staggering any pursuing enemies. As you gain two-hand and heavy armor skills and perks, you'll become swifter, tougher, and gain many more ways to deal damage and control the enemy through paralysis, stagger effects, and the like.

Two-handed warrior is a very 'barbaric' playstyle, though there is a great deal of finesse to it, even if it's hard to realize at first. Your job is to charge in, and basically swing a big weapon around wrecking everything in sight. You will be forced to retreat, but hopefully not often and hopefully you'll have ample tools to assist in this.
