Torches - seriously

Post » Tue Dec 13, 2011 6:45 am

If you're running vanilla settings, you don't really need to use torches; it's never dark enough.

Torches weigh too much now anyway, I never want to use them anymore.

Just curious, how are people having lighting issues? I've never once been in a truly 'dark' area in 180 hours of playtime.

Mine is dark as hell. You should consider turning the brightness down in game or on your tv, at least for me it makes dungeons creepier....

This.

You guys need to adjust your gamma settings or something. I have over 50 hours of gameplay in and have NEVER used a torch. I was wondering why the hell they were even in the game as there are no areas that are dark enough to carry around a bloody torch...

The Druken Mare in Whiterun has torches for sale if you really want the burden of carrying them around.

They need to add an alteration spell that puts out light sources, to aid sneaking. Would be good.

Heh, there's a torch in Whiterun that's been there for weeks now, still burning, after I dropped it there. Anyway, definitely get your companion to carry it, when you find one.

When have any of you experienced a need for torches/candlelight/magelight? I've been able to see perfectly fine in all my dungeons o.o

Also, do torches cause you to be seen earlier? I assume they will, but I figured this would be the topic to ask it in : )

Head north of winterhold
To septimus signus outpost
He'll send you to aftund
There are several torches just lying on the ground throughout the dungeon....
They're easy to spot because they are still on fire on the ground
(kinda like a flare)

Also to those saying the game isnt dark enough
of course it wont be dark if you turn the gamma up on ur comp duhh....
They made the lighting for factory settings...
I cant play a dark dungeon crawler and turn the brightness all the way and complain that i can see everything....lol
I think skyrim needed a brightness ajustor
I.e" turn gamma up and down until the skyrim symbol is barely visible"

And some of us don't want to make the game artificially brighter by turning up the brightness of the screen.

Some of us like to use torches from time to time, you know?

I like the sound of this, even though we do have a light spell already.

I'd also add in a "Bound Horse" spell just for the hell of it.

Embershard Mine south of Riverwood has a bunch of torches you can take right off the walls.

You probably didn't know this, but most torches can be taken off of their sconces.

Give torches to your companion. They will use them I hear. I use a candle spell

God I'm slow. I never thought of that.

Love to have a helmet with a constant light spell on it

I did that in Oblivion; it was really rather handy. Shame it seems impossible to do the same in Skyrim.

lol at people hatin' on torches. My game is dark enough to make the use of torches and candlelight vital. This adds to interesting situations of having to trade-off between sneaking and being able to see.

I really like it that way. I like having to use light sources in dark places... apparently this is a shocking concept...

ppl are forgetting that different tv quality and brightness settings affects brightness in game. I keep mine dark to set a realistic environment, its harder to see in some caves and dark outside in the night but thats how it should be

also brightness in the room makes a glare..not all of us are living in moms basemant ;)

My gf & my house is set up in such a way that durring the day time we have to close all of the curtains else the sun shines in on our television. This is why I play at night.

Yep, it's true that whilst Oblivion had an overabundance of torches, they've become somewhat of a rarity in Skyrim.

Personally, I take mine from the corpses of all the rebel stormcloaks I slay (they seem to carry them often). Shouldn't have betrayed the Empire :nono:

I just use candlelight/magelight over torches unless I have several. I dunno fi they respawn in respawning dungeons, but if they do theres an easy way of collecting.

I tend to only use these spells if the character's RP allows it, but they do work well. As for amassing torches: Embershard Mine alone gave me almost two dozen, and many other mines/caves have some you can take. I do wish more of them were removable, though, as sneaking around in some caves is a pain at low skill levels due to all the permanent light sources.

Odd, I have 25 torches in backpack that I never really use. It just take them off the wall in dungeons that allow it.
