Skills are entirely worthless.

why would you have 100 in smithing and no perks in it. What kind of idiot does that.

But given that skills level you up, which gives you a perk to spend, the skill itself remains useful: it directly benefits the activity in question, plus it (via leveling) gives you a perk to spend as you please, so skills are by no means useless.

You guys arent getting it!! look at how small the skill increases are!! Enchanting doesnt even get better without perks! as for smithing- you can improve weapons with low skill but you cannot make better armour. I don't really see how you could support this?

skills do to little and perks do too much. Most of them should unlock automatically.

I would guess the type of 'idiot' who doesn't use it much and levels it slowly as a secondary skill just to augment their items with no interest in creating any.

Um change isn't bad. This change was bad.

I personally like the current system, as do many others. I can understand not everyone will, but then again a lot of people disliked the old system too, and complained about it (but thats another game and another discussion).
All the skills as far as I am aware are functional without perks. They may be too low for some (some people believe that anything less than a 250 smithing skill legendary is subpar) but they are always functional. There is always benefit to them. To most people ~40% would be considered a large increase.

Enchanting doesnt even get better without perks!

More misinformation...

Given that you can find all armour in game, providing you are going to put time in, the armour can be upgraded to still allow players to reach the cap without smithing perks. Long term you don't gain as much as you'd think from smithing if you are looking to play a character for a long period. The short term benefits are good though if getting the best armour asap is your goal. I personally enjoy looking for upgrades as I play the game. (Granted weapon damage from no smithing perks is never going to be as high as with but still will be more than enough to trivialise the game).

What was important in morrowind, oblivion and probably arena and daggerfall?
skills and equipment
what was important in skyrim?
perks and enchantments! Anything else? NO!
The fact is- skills do nothing other than allow for perks.. and perks do all the changes in your character.

So by your logic, skill are important because they allow for perks.

skills have results, just very small ones. the real problem is your hardly ever made aware what the [censored] that small result even is. raising magic skills supposedly reduces mana cost, but apparently it caps at 33%. i dont even know what anything else does. does lockpick make lockpicking easier? speech might give you better prices.... i really cant remember the exact prices i had 20 levels ago. i dont know, the damn game never tells you, you have to go online or have a guide just to know what the damn skills do :banghead: .

Sneak skill: keeps you from being seen

2h weapon skill: Makes you do more damage

1h weapon skill: same

Bow skill: same

Shield skill: block more damage

Armor: resist more damage

and so on and so forth...

If you don't like how easy it is then guess what? Don't enchant! lol, I've never enchanted on any of my characters. If it's too easy don't complain about it, just don't use it if you're HARRDCORRRRRE enough.

The perk/skill system isn't as illogical as people make it out to be. Someone can spend their entire life performing some activity and get very good at it without ever being exceptional. In other words, they might have leveled their skill to 100 and be as good as a person can be at a given task without using any special tricks or techniques. The person who invests the extra effort and learns how to use a skill in new ways (by purchasing perks) can do more with a skill even though they might have less total experience. Two people who have the same amount of experience (100) might be vastly different in terms of technique.
