How do YOU fight dragons?

Post » Tue Dec 13, 2011 3:29 pm

When flying, spam magic. (spells vary upon type of dragon)
When it lands, I bash it with my great sword (+enchantments)
When dragon's low health, FUS RO DAH!

So no.. not very epic, I'd say. But this had always been my strategy.

Care to go into more detail? I know damn well Iow level illusion wouldn't work on a dragon. I hope at least. It's practically impossible to sneak up on dragons also from my experience with my stealth archer that I retired from at level 26. Might need to pick it back up if it ever stops feeling so boring.

As far as I can tell, Illusion spells don't work on Dragons at all, no matter how high the skill is or the perks you take.

You CAN sneak up on a few dragons, but only those that are pre-spawned in places (such as dragon perches). However, even with a 30x multiplier with twice enchanted legendary daedric weapons, a sneak attack only does half damage to a normal dragon, 25% to a Blood dragon, and has virtually no effect on all other dragons.

Although, from the sound of your post it looks like you read my statement wrong. I said it's more difficult to fight dragons as a stealth character.

too bad I didn't get a finishing move.. How do you trigger them? Do you need to be near the head or can you be anywhere?

No they are completly random. Sometimes you get a finishing move and sometimes you don't. In all my Dragon fights (maybe 9-10) i had 2 finishing moves.

I will not call this epic more like killing two birds with one stone. I was on my way to Winterhold and I have to go around a mountain to get there. Then I notice a dragon ahead Great! Fun times ahead!. at that time I did not feel like fighting it. Then I went around a bend and I notice a fort with mages. Fun times ahead if I played this right. So I baited the dragon and run towards the fort and the mages and dragon started fighting. I gave a dragon a helping hand killing a mage (I had a problem with these mages before.) Then I killed the dragon.

As for killing dragons I use cover and I use a bow and a lot of running and shuttle running.

I usually just machine-gun lightning bolts at him until he's dead.

Do you say "Lightning bolt lightning bolt lightning bolt!!!" when you're doing this?

I know, i was relating to that by saying how hard it was on my other sneak archer character, it was practically impossible unless something else would tank it for me, then I just shot at it until it turned to me again, so I was just wondering if you did it any differently

My method was fairly straightforward. If possible, I initiated the fight with a ranged sneak attack with the best arrow I had + strongest poison. After that I usually just kept out of melee distance while firing arrows at the dragon, moving behind cover when it breathed. Or if the character's resistance was sufficient, I stood there and took it like a boss, all while firing more arrows in it's face.

Spoiler
And then I took an arrow in the knee. And here I am now, mostly dealing with drunken brawls and petty thievery. It's been too long since we had a good bandit raid.

Mostly, I let other people ground it and whack it with my axe. Usually, it heads for the nearest settlement if it's not already in a town, so I run half a mile after it and give it a few whacks after the guards have faced it. :-) I try to keep my axe poisoned with something, and I usually down a resistance potion or two for dragons.

Today's, it showed up as I finished Treva's Watch and was heading off to the next adventure. It went to TW, where the NPCs attacked it, and I ran back and assaulted it lamely with firebolt and an ice staff. I don't usually do magic, but I thought it needed help landing. It was airborne more than I like. That was my first blood dragon, too. Prior to this, they've been generic.

My Breton healer/destruction mage has Lydia in resist enchanted armor and shield, a sword with health absorb to tank the dragon after I dragonrend/marked for death. I keep her up with my high heals and assist in dmg with my moderate spell dmg. Makes for a fun fight when it feels like you actually need help to defeat dragons.

My first blood dragon fight though...things got alittle out of hand as some stupid Thalmor elves got dragged into the fight as they passed by and ended up giving me a nice new hole in the center of my chest when I hit one with a fireball spell when I though I had firebolt selected.

Even with no resistances thanks to the patch, I fight dragons the way I'd fight wyverns in Monster Hunter. I get onto their flank, and stab their hind leg with my sword. Keeps me out of the way of their breath, and bite attacks. Considering the fact that an ancient/elder dragon can do double my health bar, nearly, thanks to no resistances, in one breath attack, it works.

Marked for Death is pretty awesome to use on'em.

I use my bow when they're perched on buildings, and stuff. Might take pot shots at'em while they're flying.

Jordis and Vigilance help a lot in killin'.

I don't have Dragonrend yet. :/

I run for cover and unenthusiastically fire some arrows into the sky while the dragon chases Lydia around. If it lands I sneak up from behind and whack at his tail with my sword.
If Lydia capitulates and the dragon turns to face me I drop everything and run away. :whistling:

I play on Master. I never use cover. I don't block. I use light armor. I use a poisoned ebony bow + ebony arrows + applicable element resist potions & health potions

Yawn. Wake me when an overhaul mod makes this game harder. I'm looking at YOU, "Martigen".

Not really. I just spam whatever elemental spells are appropriate and hit them with my ax.

Bows = not epic. (to me).

It was much more intense to fight shield + sword on a dragon, too bad I didn't get a finishing move.. How do you trigger them? Do you need to be near the head or can you be anywhere?

Found most success being in front of it and doing a power attack when the life is low. It seems to work about 50% of the time for me...

As an archer on master difficulty, I'm thinking that I'll have to take the stagger perk to not make it a potion drinking contest. My mage can often kill them before they take flight the second time. It kind of svcks because there is really no in between making the fight a gimmick (stagger) and making it a battle of attrition.

Epic also isn't really the word I'd use to describe the fights anymore, also.

edit: Oh, and a dragon that wont land? Forget about it. I'd have to be an industrialized arrow making machine to even hit him a few times.
