You can get both of Hircine's though, so if you have a recent save before his quest....

The guide lies, skeleton key does not count.

If you destroy the staff, you have to get both of Hiricine's. this can be done by Killing the hunters via allying with the werewolf, once the hunters are dead exit the cave and recieve the ring, then immediately re-enter the cave and kill the werewolf and skin him, Hiricine will appear and give you the armor

I didn't mention the skeleton key. I said nightingale. Though I think you're right, I do believe my guide refers to the key instead.

Also you can use the Oghma Infinium way early on and still get credit for having it
