A Question of Levelling...

I was just wondering if the group had some thoughts about the levelling system from Oblvion? I've got mixed feelings about it. On the surface it makes perfect sense, swinging a sword makes you better at swinging a sword. Haggling over the price of a sweet roll makes you a better merchant. In other games, killing monsters could well make you a better seamstress if you chose to use your XP that way at level up. On the other hand, the first time I played Oblivion for major skills, I chose useful stuff... destruction, restoration, blade, sneak, archery etc... and that character was getting his ass kicked very quickly. So for my 2nd character, I picked my least used skills for my majors and that character ruled the world. That's so counter intuitive. Also, playing on a console and not having access to stats-based mods, I needed to hire an accountant to make sure I was getting my 5s for each level gained and not leveling too soon or wasting points be levelling too late.

I think there's a great basis for a leveling system in there, it's just that it needs tweaking. People should WANT to level, not fear that you messed up your math and "wasted" a level.

I agree with this.

I like that you level by increasing your skills, and not by getting XP, but the level-up bonuses needs to be tweaked.
In Oblivion you had to plan your leveling carefully to have an efficient character. The fact that you had to choose major skills you did not use much to get the most out of the system just proves that the system was broken.

It was a problem with level scaling mostly that is unlikely to return in Skyrim, but the multiplier on certain stats as you leveled up is a bad design we have seen both in Morrowind and in Oblivion so there is a chance we will see it in Skyrim however I′d like it if it was reduced or scrapped, or changed in some other way, perhaps it would be possible that instead of the multiplier just disappearing as you level up if you don′t choose it, for it to be memorized by the PC for the next time you would level up, and even possibly if you had maybe a +2 multiplier in Agility and leveled up again that the multipliers would add, so instead if you′d normally have a +3 you′d have +2 & +3 giving you a +5 multiplier.

We have a rather long open thread http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1148814-remove-extensive-level-scaling-in-skyrim-part-2/ for this discussion. Let's please use that one until it's full. Thanks.
