*Will-o-the-Wisp. lol.
You need a silver, daedric or enchanted weapon.
By the way, what does this have to do with the Main Quest?

I use a magic sword, but the things kick my a** every time. I've saved and tried numerous times always with the same outcome. Over at Fort Empire I just ran out of the building to get away! I slash and slash to no avail. I said Main Quest because I'm at the Shrine of Azura. I was sent here by Martin.

Oh right, sorry, I didn't know he sent you there, i already had an artifact.
What enchantments does the sword have? If it has Paralysis, the paralysis won't work, otherwise, just wear lots of fortify health equipment, and have lots of Restore Health potions/spells. If thats still too hard knock the difficulty slider to the left a bit.

First the official warning, do not give the Azura's star artefact to Martin. It makes recharging a magical weapon far easier, you will probably need it later in the game.

Secondly a magical weapon is very useful against a Will-o-the-Wisp, detect life is also very nice as it let you see is easier, ranged weapon or spells/ staffs are also useful. And yes lots of restore health, if you have a scroll on you with a summon scamp or something use it then it get close.

This.
If your character doesn't really have 'morals' or is a prankster of sorts, try the Sheogorath quest, its pretty easy and the reward isn't fantastic.

If u are fast enough you can just run away from it and shoot it at the same time, if u have a bow or some destruction magic ofc. ^^ A fire spell with time based damage (forgot the real word 4 it) is good you can see it eaven though its invisible then. Best tip i got is keep moving. ^^

Let me give you a word of advice.

Do NOT give Azura's Star to Martin.

That would be a horrible, tragic waste of one of the best items in the entire game.

I repeat. Do NOT give up Azura's Star.

Give up one of the less useful ones like Sanguine's Rose or Wabbajack. Those are novelties which you can really do without.

But do NOT NOT NOT NOT NOT give up Azura's Star.

Did I mention that you SHOULD NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE GIVE UP AZURA'S STAR, ONE OF THE BEST ITEMS IN THE GAME.

Have I made myself perfectly clear?

At low levels, I recommend doing Sheogorath's quest for a Daedric artifact - like Azura, you can do that quest at level 2 and most players find his reward a much less valuable toy than Azura's Star.

Azura's Star is well worth obtaining (and keeping) for your own use. If you are having trouble with a wisp, then the vampires that lie ahead are likely to cause you problems as well. That said, wisps are best fought using detect life and at range by bow or spell. As has been mentioned, you need other than a normal weapon to fight them up close (daedric, silver, enchanted, bound, Honorblade of Chorrol, etc). Actually killing a wisp is not necessary at all. What you want is the glow dust for an offering - you can buy it several places, including The Main Ingredient in the Market District.

I agree, DO NOT give away Azura's Star. I think it's one of the most useful, if not the most, items in the game.
I use a bow enchanted with fire for those will o'wisps. Two hits takes it down. Course these days with my Atronach birthsign, I just stand there for a bit, before taking it down.

Aw, give Martin the thing he asked for. The survival of the empire is more important than a refillable soul gem...

Seriously, if one is roleplaying, this is one of those game decisions that depend on the character you're playing. Just because I know that Azura's Star is too valuable in the future to give up now, it doesn't mean that my character knows it. For me, there has to be a good justification for my character both realizing the significance of that artifact, and knowing that there is an alternative.

For most of my play-throughs, I have had some reason for a character to be exploring on the road between Bravil and Leyawiin at a point prior to that part of the main quest, and to have thus discovered the Shrine of Sheogorath. That reason could be guild-related travel, or it could be that a character is doing the wayshrine pilgrimage (there is a wayshrine very close to the Shrine of Sheogorath.)

One of my characters, a dunmer from Morrowind who worshipped Azura, was vehemently opposed to dealing with any other Daedric lords, and considered Azura's gift to be the only fitting sacrifice to the task of saving Tamriel. It's a game-changing decision, of course, but that's what makes this interesting. There are hundreds of ways to play the game.

But yes, from a purely game-playing point of view, Azura's Star is too valuable to give to Martin. :)

It is actually funny to kill a 'tiny dot of light' with an arrow or a warhammer.

but as mentioned above, if u r having troubles with them, then the vampires will depress u to death, undeath, rebirth and reloads. And death.

For Azura's quest, I usually pick up some glow dust for free in Bruma Mages' Guild. And I keep the Star, because I use enchanted weapons. The only character type that can do without Azura's Star would be a pure mage that never uses an enchanted weapon at all, but if you're having a problem with wills-o-the-wisp then you're obviously not playing one of those. A mage would be absorbing their spells or draining their magicka to leave them helpless instead of waving a useless piece of metal through them.
