Number of save files

Does the number of save files effect game performance on PC? I have over 500 and started to worry :sadvaultboy:

It can't be a coincidence. Last Friday I played for 7 hours without a single issue. Saturday I started the game and after a minute or so I got my first BSOD playing Skyrim. I restarted my PC and I got the same blue screen. After some troubleshooting which involved disabling my hardware overclocks and reverting to a previous ATI driver and :banghead: the very same problem after a minute of playing. Than I noticed that my saves folder was already like 700 MB and that my save files were almost 17 MB each! I moved most of them and leave only 5 save files and now I can play without a single problem. There's got to be a relation there somewhere in the number of files or the SIZE!

I have 294 saves and my character is only level 18, with about 6-7 hours played.

I hate Oblivion. I hate Fallout 3. I hate New Vegas. I hate Gamebryo. Because of those games and their constant crashing (especially modded Oblivion) I save so much I DON'T EVEN REALIZE I'M DOING IT. I'm serious, it's almost 100% subconscious because of playing those crashfests and having to save every 30 seconds in case it crashed. I've never had Skyrim crash once since the patch, and I only had it crash about 4-5 times over 100 hours before the patch, but I still save like this because it's so ingrained in me. I find it very disturbing.

I'm at number 912 now, I remember I had well, well over 1000 on Oblivion. I've been playing TES since Daggerfall came out, and I've learned you can never have too many saves!

Can't possibly have an affect. I maxed out the # of saves in oblivion and never had an issue and it was modded beyond recognition. I have 200 or so @ 30 hours and am having no issues.

I don't think you have to worry at all, no reason to really. could always go into the saves folder and delete some earlier saves.

It seems to me that skyrim save files get huge quickly. I compared my mid level (18) character to one of my highest level oblivion and fallout saves and it's 2mb bigger than a 60th level oblivion save. I have stearte overwriting nearly all of my older saves rather than making new ones. I hope they don't get corrupted easily.

I also had over 1000 saves on Oblivion :D and had no problems, however I am worried if it can effect performance for Skyrim

I'm always afraid to delete my recent saves accidentally, so I think I won't do that if I have no problems

I would think there might be other issues than the saves casuing the BSODs. Could be HDD related.

I try to overwrite them as often as I can to minimize the amount I have. God knows I can't afford slower game performance than I already deal with.

I'm running outta space!

I'm a saving fiend though.

I sneak into a room. save. kill a person. save. pick up a potion. save. I get SO paranoid, that I'll save before I go through a door....which will autosave as I come out the other side.

I made a post in the tech form after I recieved excessive amounts of lag at 700 overwrites on my main character. Because nobody could help, I had to START A NEW CHARACTER. To the person who said it can't have an effect, well it certainly can and a large effect as well. I'm pretty sure I have the same problem as the PS3 people. Bethesda better fix this in a patch cause it was quite infuriating, I think the save file got corrupted if nothing else because other save files work fine.

Keep in mind that I overwrite, not make countless saves and I'm getting lag on my main. My file is only 6-7 MB as well.

it will only affect how long screens like save and load take to come up other than that though the game is only using 1 file the entire time
