So for a while now I've been running away from dragons like a scared little girl.

Besides the first story scripted one and one I happened to stumble upon (which I expoited by hiding in 3 small out-houses or whatever), I'm level 19 and haven't killed any.

So, is now a good time to start fighting dragons?

I don't want to wait too late and have it be a breeze.....thats no fun.

I've no idea what level I was. I only ever ran from one random dragon, and that was just to kite it back to a town for guards to help me. After that, I've been taking them all on.

Lv.5, I suppose. If a character's going to pursue the main quest, I want dragons in the world as soon as possible.

random encounters got much more common at level 15ish.

This is the road your travelling down. Normal dragons will never be a challenge to you now, probably not blood dragons either. You'll have to wait for the next tier, I guess. What a lot of people find when they start fighting dragons after running from them for so long is that they're a lot easier than they thought. "This is what I was afraid of?"

My Khajiit has killed three at level one.

Did the first quest one in the low teens. Not sure when I killed my first random one, but I know that I saw very few random ones at all in the low teens and early 20's. Heck, even into the 30's. But, it's pretty random - some people complain about them being everywhere. :shrug:


One thing to remember - there are multiple strengths of dragons. Dragon, Blood Dragon, Frost Dragon, Ancient Dragon, Elder Dragon.... even if Dragons become easy for you, one of the stronger ones will still be ready and waiting to beat you up. :tongue:

How do you know the difference in the dragons?

I killed one that spit frost....so I'm guessing thats a frost dragon.

But how do you know if it's elder, or ancient, or blood?

When you look at an enemy, it has it's name above the health bar. That's where you can see what type of dragon it is.

Let me guess, he had a sprained shoulder too.

Anyway, I didn't start seeing them too frequently in the wild until around lvl 12 or so. Up until then I only fought the quest related weakling in "Dragon Rising" and another regular dragon that was attacking a town. Now, I can kill regular, Blood, and Frost dragons with ease. Elder's put up a bit more of a fight, but Ancient are the only type that still causes me significant damage.

That seems odd b/c I just killed a dragon that attacked Winterhold right after I did the Saaltar quest and then walked to where there was one perched up on a hill not too far from the Azura or whatever shrine and killed it.

Thing is the one that attacked Winterhold was really easy and didn't seem to have much health. The one on the hill took some strategy.

Are there different stregth regular dragons? B/c I looked where it has the name of whatever you're attacking and if I remember correctly the first said "Dragon" and the second one which had more health also said "Dragon".
