Sound Problem

Hi,

I decided to reinstall Morrowind today and it all seemed to go fine, game starts fine, but the sound is totally messed up.

It stutters all the time and also lags badly so that what I hear is related to what I was doing in game seconds before, and sometimes it stops completely for a few seconds.

My FPS is good, usually at least 30+ but the sound problems do seem to be worse when FPS falls, i.e. resource heavy times. They seem to improve when I enter the inventory or menu, i.e. when the game is paused.

I have tried playing with sound as either software or hardware, doesn't seem to make any difference.
I have tried reinstalling twice.
I have tried with vanilla Morrowind, then with both expansions and all patches, same problem.

Odd thing is I had it working fine on the same computer a few months ago. Since then only difference is new PSU, graphics card and some speakers added.
Sound is fine in all other contexts, for instance iTunes or Oblivion.

Any help would be great as although the game works, it massively lessens the experience to have to turn all the sound off.

Specs
Win7 64 bt
i7 920 2.67GHz
4 GB RAM
AMD 6800 series card
Onboard sound
Creative speakers

Thanks
