Is the damn combination to the damn door even in that damn hole in the ground, or do I have to guess, even though there are 81 damn possible combinations to try?

Wouldn't this go in "Cheats, Hints and Spoilers?"

Well, not really. I'm not asking details, and there are a ton of doors with combinations in Skyrim. This isn't a spoiler, I just want to know if the combination to the door is in the caves somewhere - as it has been with every other combination door I've run across - or am I going to have to actually guess at the combination for a door with 81 possible combinations.

Oh holy hell. 3x3x3x3=81. There's not a chance in hell I'm going to guess through 81 possible combinations. If they seriously intended that as a solution I'll let the quest sit on my quest log incomplete from now until the sky falls before I go through that degree of tedium. If that's what they intended, that's absurd.

EDIT: Yeah, thanks for the combination. Much appreciated. I don't usually care for being told this sort of thing, but either they thought guessing through a bunch of combinations would be a fun experience, or somebody just forgot to put the hint in the caves. I went through them like three times looking.

Ugh. I don't wanna complain a lot, and I get annoyed when I see other people with bogus or overly-dramatic complaints, but are they serious? They've got a pathway in this dungeon that is literally impossible for a follower to walk down. Not kinda impossible, it's actually impossible.

Spoiler
Lydia trips every trap she comes across - I've seen her go out of her way to step on a trap before - and there's this elevated walkway with (1) a trigger that sets off a trap that knocks you off the pathway, then (2) a flamethrower trap, then (3) another trigger that sets off another trap to knock you off the path. The path is so narrow that you cannot go around the triggers, you have to jump over them - and so it's impossible for a follower to cross this pathway, because followers are from some unknown species that is incapable of jumping.

Ridiculous.

Thats the way of the game telling you that you have to do it alone ;)! Leave her outside or tell her to wait and pick her up later.

The combination to the lock in Ansilmund IS in Ansilmund. It's also repeated in at least 4 other places that I know of and probably more. I *think* it might depend on why you're in Ansilmund in the first place as to whether you'll think of looking for it in the right place(s). (Trying to write this in a way that's not too spoilery)

Hmmm. I guess so. Never did see it, but I'll take your word for it. I wasn't quite right about the walkway. I went ahead and told Lydia to follow me, and somehow she managed to avoid getting knocked off the catwalk by the first trap, and I walked her around the second myself. The flamethrower she just had to sack up and deal with it. I thought the swinging-door traps would knock her off the catwalk like they did the Draugr I saw it happen to.

Oh gods. The swinging door traps got me. Twice. And I'm supposed to be a thief :(

The combination is there. It's in

Spoiler
the book (not the journal) on the broken table if you're facing the statues. Read it and it tells you the combination.
