How do you kill dragons and how hard is it for you?

Post » Thu Dec 15, 2011 10:10 am

i've been killing dragons mostly however I can, using magic shouts melee weapons etc.

Alduin example:

First I've killed alduin with my enchanted daedric war axe and sword, together they had about 300 attack + about 20 absorb health and 20 shock damage for each
So I hit him about 5 times with these weapons and he died.

That was so easy that then I decided to kill him in a different way with bigger challenge, and I plan to kill every next dragon this way like a true warrior:

Second time I killed him with my bare fists in daedric gaunlets, it took me about 10 minutes

Do you have any unique ways of killing dragons?

Goof off for a bit until they decide to land, then I use a combination of power-attacks and Unrelenting Force to interrupt whatever type of breath they use. This can either trivialize a fight if it goes well, or get me a "Sudden Death" bite if I get too comfortable and am not able to interrupt the breath.

Seems like a reasonable trade off. :P

I kill with kindness...which involves a lot of running and screaming and trying to get him to attack someone else.

1.) Stay near or under cover, wait for a chance to land Dragonrend.

2.) Run in with my enchanted paralyzing warhammer, disable Dragon and chain attack to death. Should the dragon land far away, apply paralyzing poison using bow.

Overall difficulty: Low, unless the Paralyze effect fails to land.

Before hitting 100 enchant: Get behind cover and occasionaly take a peak and shoot an arrow.

After: Let the dragon focus on my follower with 50% resist all elements, shoot arrows as fast as possible while standing out in the open, because with 50% resist the dragon breath isn't instant death anymore. ;)

I try to get out of line of sight until they land. Btw, I think alduin is not a good example dragon. He seemed easier than most.

I mostly rely on followers and summons to take aggro while I shoot at it with a bow. Then I run in with shield and axe to finish up.
Usually this includes alot of running, pot chugging and screaming.

The easiest way to kill a dragon I can think of is just summoning a lighting storm and hide somewhere.

I remember fighting first frost dragon, it was so hard, I had to run for about 5 minutes and hide behind some rocks every time he was getting near me until I got under the roof, then I was just shooting him with lighting bolts and hiding back under the roof it took me about 20 minutes to kill him.

Honestly dragons never range attack me too much. Maybe for the first 2 minutes, then stick to ground fighting. It makes it much easier for me to jab my trusty war axe into its brain.

hmm i dragonrend them so they land, then i sprint up to them (they craftily landed someplace with a distance equal to half my stamina bar). I then run over to their side and hack them to death, it they somehow manage to survive and take off i just repeat step one.

if they are frost dragons i usually pop a resist frost... seems like frost dragons hit really hard for some reason

Real original isn't it

I just started the main quest and it's not too hard to kill a dragon if you have help.
They can run interference while you use your bigger weapons/spells on the dragon.
The last one I killed with the help of Lydia.

Well with my mage I use the Thunderbolt spell and Greater Ward for protection. Greater Ward completely blocks all damage from the dragon breath attacks, at least it does for me on Adept (might not work on higher difficulties, I haven't tried it). In between breath attacks I dual-cast Lightning Bolt, then when I'm low on magicka I use the rest of it to summon a Dremora Lord to distract the dragon while my magicka recharges. While I'm blocking with the Greater Ward, I shoot Thunderbolt with the other hand. Those tactics -- combining Greater Ward and Thunderbolt, then dual-casting Lightning Bolt when the dragon isn't "breathing", then summoning the dremora lord as a distraction -- works very well for me.

Magicka isn't much of an issue for me since I have a huge magicka pool to begin with, and I have the Atronach perk (Absorb 30% of all magical effects used on me), and all three Magic Resistance Alteration perks (30% Magic resistance), + 25% magic resistance from being a Breton, and the Ward Absorb perk that lets my Ward spells absorb magic. So I never seem to run out of magic too fast...

At earlier levels that was a different story. At early levels with my mage, it was basically a matter of ducking behind cover when the dragon breathed, then spamming dual-casted lightning bolt until I ran out of magic, then running around like crazy trying not to die while my magic regenerated. Not very epic at those levels, lol. :P But now it's much easier and more fun.

I use Spellbreaker and Dragonbane with a touch of Storm Call for effect. When I don't feel like tanking it with Spellbreaker I use Nightingale Bow and run for any natural cover I can find.

Shout them down to the ground.

Run in with melee weapon and work them over.

First few times these were intense fights but now I'm not scared of them at all. In fact, they're pretty easy - I don't really think they should be however.

If I'm not hiding and hoping it passes, I largely rely on my follower or NPCs to range-attack it down (if it doesn't land in the first place) and then hit it with my axe. But I've been known to comically shoot magic or a staff at it ("I'm helping!" :-)).

Destruction Dual Cast + Impact perks + Thunderbolt spell + enchantments for 0% cost of spells = super-easy on Master difficulty. They can't even do breathe attacks in air because of constant staggering.
