Housing Frustrations

Post » Thu Dec 15, 2011 7:41 am

I, like many people, am experiencing the glitch that disables the ability to purchase the home in Windhelm. Now I found out that I cannot purchase the house in Riften (lowly Wujeeta fell to a dragon long ago). I am also beginning to get frustrated with my inventory of locked items from completed quests. I love the series-- been playing console Elder since Morrowind. I thought the new Radiant Story was supposed to fix broken quests due to NPC death?

Yeah, the number of breaking quest bugs is frustrating. At this point, I'm Thane of Solitude and Whiterun, with the house & housecarl for each... and the other three cities are broken. In Markarth I have the house and have done everything in the city, but despite 20+ quests for the Jarl's steward afterwards, he will not offer me a Thaneship (if that's a word.) In Riften, the Jarl will tell me she's going to make me Thane now... then go back to drinking her mead without actually doing it, so no title and housecarl for me. And as for Windhelm, the quest that starts things off simply won't begin, so I can't even get the house, let alone the title.

I even ran into a game-breaking bug in the main quest and had to use the console to circumvent it, but alas, even that workaround hasn't seemed to help for the Thane quests.

Sorry to hear your troubles-- glad i am not alone. I hope they get a comprehensive patch out soon. I devoted too much time to this character to just start up another.

I got the same Problem in Riften.. I finished all the quests, bought a house (+all Equipment), and the questhelper tells me: Go back to the Jarl of Riften. But.. she is not giving me a houscarl, or a title.

(sry for spelling mistakes.. if you find some.. keep them and smile)

So, I found the fix for Riften, but you're not going to like it. Apparently at that point in her speech, you have to buy the house. If you already own the house, it breaks. I had to go back to an old savegame where I didn't own the house, and repeat the quests without buying the house until Jarl Maven insists I do so, and then it worked fine, and I got my title & housecarl.

There may be another workaround, though I haven't tried it: go to the console and do "sqs FreeformRiftenThane". See which stage number is the first one with a 0 next to it; if it were 50, run "setstage FreeformRiftenThane 50". Repeat until either she talks to you or you magically become Thane.

None of the weapon racks worked for the Whiterun house.

Now that I'm in Riften, the weapon racks display the item lop-sided (it looks awful), and the book shelves don't work. They accept the books, but then the books completely disappear, and the shelves do not respond after that. Either for adding more or retrieving those it had (assuming they are made invisible instead of just gone).

The bookshelf issue you describe was a known bug in v1.2 with all bookshelves in player-owned housing. It was fixed in today's v1.3 patch. Might want to check the weapon racks again, too.
