Why is everyone obsessed with Whiterun and Lydia?

Post » Thu Dec 15, 2011 4:53 am

Because in 4 weeks of play I've only been to riverwood and whiterun so far :P
I hope to see another city/town soon, but I'll continue to take things slow...

I agree with the fact that Whitrun's central location is the best. I also do a lot of work with the companions. Also I am 100 as a smith so having 2 there works for me. Also Whiterun to me is a prefect balance to me. It is not as cosmopolitan as Solitude nor is it a dump like windhelm. I also like Riften I feel I can do more dirt there and not get into trouble. I used to like Dawnstar seeing it was the second city I visited, but it is a boring town and the smith there svcks.. So to me it goes like this..

Whiterun
Riftin
Solitude.

As far as Lydia, I love her and wanted to marry her and waited for a while hoping they would patch it. Thinking it would be at least another month for the patch and that is just a guess. I went ahead and married the dark elf chick from the mage college. I think she has a cute voice. Still i thought Lydia is cute and was my first choice to marry her. She is now in dadric/dragon armor with everything chanted, she kicks [censored]!

I think Honeyside is the most homely of the houses I've brought so far. It's got a lot of character, and the porch out the back is a really nice place to sit and watch the sun go down. So much so, I'm considering moving my main digs from Proudspire to Riften. It helps that I'm part of the Thieves guild to, plus I think Riften has a lot of character - the water side location is a nice touch. Reminds me a bit of Leyawiin.

I had Lydia as my companion only for one thing:

Spoiler
For the sacrifice to Boethiah

I use riften as my main place, and Borgakh as companion.

I own the house in Whiterun as it's homely and I just love the way everything is near and that Whiterun reminds me of Rohan. It's just like Edoras.

When I'm in Solitude with my Altmer char I sleep in the Thalmor HQ as it's empty and the bed is not owned. Makes me feel like I'm part of the Thalmor even though I'm not. The Solitude house was a letdown, yes it's huge but didn't seem like home to me for some reason.

Lydia is actually pretty good! She's a great tank and distracts my opponent enough for me to flank them. Lydia isn't overly annoying and although I personally do like the roadside dialogue, she says just enough to make it immersive and not annoying. However, Breezehome...GAH.

Not enough places to store my stuff!

I like Whiterun because Markarth is annoying with all it's stairs and both it and Riften has crazy framerate drop when I enter them.
I haven't really been to Winterhold, Solitude, Morthal, Dawnstar or Falkreath yet so I can't comment on those.
As for Windhelm, it's okay I guess, but I've learned where all the shops are in Whiterun so it's easier to find what I'm seeking there.

If Markarth didn't have it's crazy framerate drop then I'd prefer it's artistic design, people and lore, but as of now it's just annoying to go to.

ive been waiting and waiting for the dawnstar "house" unfortunitly the bedroom appears to have only two containers, less than the exstra rooms, i have no idea which are safe so im not using random barrels here and there, when they may swallow up my stuff, why bethesda why? did you think that huge bare wall in my bedroom that could have fit like 6 containers against, was a nice feature?!!!!?!?!?!!!!???!!?!!?!!

its not so much "obsessed" as "easy"

Whiterun is the first big town you get to, is central, easy to navigate, has decent shops and amenities, contains one of the major "guild" questlines that pretty much everyone who goes melee will want to do and from a lore pov the Yarl is an ok guy and its a kinda almost a neutral town

the house is not large or fancy but imo sometimes people like a small "concise" house better with just a few chests/cupboards to manage and a simple quick to navigate layout (personally i actually delete a lot of the stuff in the Whiterun house including a few containers to make it more minimalist)

Lydia is actually, despite some people not liking her sarky conversation, a pretty good kick ass companion and she is decently attractive (if a little butch)

its easy to see why, even when offered some of the alternatives, people decide just to stick with what they have.

plus moving house is a pain in the ass :P

Windhelm for me. Don't really care for the city itself, but the house has more bookshelves, mannequins, weapon racks, trophy displays and storage than any other.

whiterun - fine and bright city with great scenery outside the walls. jarls and people are okay. there are a beatiful tree in the center of the city.

dawnstar, morthal, winterhold - too cold for me, too few people live there to call it a capital

solitude - if you like big space, big road and luxuries, this is your place

riften - it's a fine city if you like fishes, sewers, fall forest and shadow. the night is often foggy though. and there are many thieves running around in the midnight

windhelm - rival of solitude in size. but the people are racist and somehow the colors of the house and the colors of the stone floor makes this city dirty

markarth - I hate this city. too high, too many conflicts, many jerks, and even worse there are rebels outside the wall

falkreath - I like this city. reminds me of quite countryside

My first home is Whiterun, as it is for many, and because of that I feel a certain loyalty. I ardently defend it and the surrounding countryside - I don't want an Elder Dragon swooping down on my neighbors. I loved going to the smelter, talking with the smith there, and selling my goods at the various merchants. The allure of enchantment and promise of luxury pulled me towards Solitude and eventually I bought Proudspire Manor. While it's a beautiful home and I house many of my cherished treasures there, it does not serve as a very adequate crafting base. In light of this, I bought one more property - Vlindrel Hall in Markarth. I had all of my enchanting and alchemical equipment installed with access to not only a forge but a smelter. The silver mine isn't bad either. The one thing that is unsettling about Markarth are the residents - something seems wrong there.

My favorite house is the one in Windhelm. Its a lot more complete than the homes in riften and whiterun.I also like the snowy and cozy atmosphere.

I'm in the same boat as you. I'm taking my sweet time with this masterpiece of a game. Hell, I haven't even fought a dragon yet! LoL But I finally started the quest to get the home because I'm carrying an overabundance of ingredients that I need to store somewhere.

Whiterun is the town I am most comfortable in, and where I have my house. I am going to have homes in all the cities eventually, but Whiterun will always be home base. That said though I like all of the cities I have visited so far, with the exception of Dawnstar I haven't been there just yet. I am a little disappointed with Winterhold, Morthal, and Falkreath; they just seem like unfinished cities especially when compared to Markarth, Whiterun, Solitude, Windhelm, and Riften. It's almost as if the developers didn't set aside enough time to fully develop them.

It's funny that the line every hates (I am sworn to carry your burdens -____-) is very different in the Russian version of the game. There she basically says "I will happily carry your gear" or something very similar but in a very happy, excited tone. Which is I think how it's supposed to be. It now makes me want to give her more stuff, because she is excited to see what I'll give her. :)
As for whiterun, I just like the layout, the look, and it just feels very homelike overall.

My three favorites are Whiterun, Solitude and Windhelm.

Whiterun:
The Companions
The Jarl is a good man
It have some sentimantal value due to the MQ
I like the arcitecture

Solitude:
The Bards College
Imperial HQ
I have rgeat respect for Legate Rikke and General Tullius(flawed though they may be)
Proudspire Manor
It reminds me a bit about Ebonheart from Morrowind, both in arcitecture and purpose

Windhelm:
Stormcloak HQ
Hjerim
I have a great deal of respect for Ulfric Stormcloak(flawed though he may be)
I like how the arcitecture partially resemble the old nordic tombs.
