Armour and weapon degrade

Post » Thu Dec 15, 2011 11:33 am

Has damage or degrading to armour and weapons been removed in skyrim? Or is it still there but hidden? I'm always wondering whether my sword is as effective as it was a few days ago. In oblivion it would be useless by now until I used armoury skills to repair it.

Unfortunately it's one of the things that got removed. I guess they had to dumb down the game even more for the console players.

Yes, because the platform you use to play games are a reflection on your intelligence.

It was removed because it didn't fit in with the new skillsystem.

I always thought it was tedious to spend time to bring everything back to 100 after each fight. All my weapons and armor were at top condition at any given time anyway, so I'm glad Beths removed that.

Ok thanks.

It's a bad move to remove it in my opinion but nice to know its not hidden.

Because repairing stuff was challenging? It was just annoying, I'm glad it's gone.

There was nothing about repairing equipment that required any brain power. It was the most annoying feature of Oblivion and FO3. I felt obliged to constantly repair my equipment if it was the least bit damaged. I hated it.

*edit* Oh, PC gamer here. I love challenging games that require thought. Repairing does nothing to advance either of those things.

It was a pointless mechanic that was tedious just for the sake of being tedious. It was not fun and it sure as hell never made the slightest bit of sense.

I'm glad it's gone.

there is no more degradation, but your sword probably isn't as useful unless you've upgraded it at a grindstone.

I like the idea of having to maintain equipment, but in previous incarnations the degradation process happened so fast it was ridiculous. They could slow it to snails pace, but then you couldn't put a skill to it cause it'd hardly ever level due to lack of use. So then, what, do you make everyone an instant master at repairing armour and swords, even though they never wear it or prefer to cast spells? Or do we give everyone a random chance of success - BS that is becoming the sole property of board games once again.

Even better, lets just be done with the whole design ball-ache by removing the whole thing, and free up some memory in the process!

Mr. PC troll didn't think of that, he was too excited at the prospect of a sniping opportunity, and the chance to represent his gaming community in a negative way. Well done mate!

It is a nice addition and maybe could be a bit like lockpicking, patch it up a bit at lower levels and more refined maintenance at higher levels.

I'd only ever want it if I play a guy who lives in a single city and only hunts for profit. The need for sleep, food and drink would fit the same category for me.

ooh I like that idea actually, a little mini-game. The problem is though you have to remember that if people have to do it ALL THE TIME it quickly becomes a chore thus detracting from the fun of the game. Dont do it enough and it isn't viable as a skill.

Maybe just a mini-game you do once in a blue moon, with no skill attached?

Yes, depending on use and not too often. In Oblivion it was nuts, but at a slower pace it could be fun to have to maintain equipment. It will be more often for the dungeon exploring warrior (adding to the experience) and virtually never for the mage (or add a maintenance spell for the mage).

I hope they also remove that feature in the next Fallout game, it's damn annoying to repair your weapon/armor after every little fight to keep it optimal.

Anyone who's glad weapon repairing is gone into the whole "immersion" thing? :)
It all depends in your point of view. Sure it is tedious to clean/repair anything, then again, it adds to the difficulty level of combat if your weapon degrades as you fight, and obviously a tad of realism to the game.

And a quick edit to add: need to wait for the CS to see if indeed it was removed from the game, or just not set.

I'm one of the people happy to see weapon and armor degradation removed from the game. But they didn't just remove degradation, they gave us something more useful in it's place....smithing . I'm MUCH happier with creating/improving than I was repairing all the time.

It seems to me that degradation was removed more as a playability issue. IOW, it's pointless. It's ridiculously easy to repair/upkeep weapons and armor, especially when you're higher level and "rich". So, it's kind of like eating, one of the basic, tedious necessities that can easily be assumed to allow for more story streamlining and less nuisance interruptions. As far as intelligence levels being measured by platform preference, I am a writer and self-taught, gainfully employed programmer with a very broad knowledge base. I have tested in the past routinely in genius level range on any IQ test I've taken. My wife is about the same. My child is top of her class and performing 2-3 grade levels ahead of her peers. I prefer to play on XBox, and my wife and child prefer Wii (although the little one still plays Sims and Spore on PC). "Dumbed down for console users" is an inane statement. Perhaps, "dumbed down to aid in ease of development across multiple platforms" might, and only might, be a more appropriate statement. But it has nothing to do with any given platform's user base. Skyrim is as rich or richer than Oblivion and Morrowind. It's just different. Welcome to the world, everything changes in time. If you're not picking up on that and focusing on niggling little useless feature removals and letting that guide your assessment of the game, well, you might want to look at redefining your platform user base assessments.

Yes because it was so difficult for us 'console' players to get our tiny little heads around. I can write a thesis on nanophysics but when it comes to repairing an item in The Elder Scrolls, well i have to say.......... i'm flumoxed!

I would bet a lot on pc gamers being the smartest.

How they ignore the forum rules, you mean? Or that they didn't read them in the first place? Just in case, let me repost it for you.

7. Flaming is not allowed.

Insulting individuals or groups of members and name calling are flames. Any remark that is made to insult or demean another member or group of members will be considered a flame and thus you may receive a warning for it.
Calling people a troll or an apologist for instance can both be considered a flame as can calling someone stupid or ADD. Attacking Xbox players, PS3 players or PC players is not allowed and calling them "console kiddies" or in anyway indicating someone is in some way a lesser person because of their choice is considered a flame here.
