Quest management

I'm wondering what views people have on this.

I am currently level 16 and I've got almost 20 quests on the go including the miscellaneous ones. The problem is I think I've taken on too many that my head can cope with! I feel now that when I select a quest I've forgotten all about what the quest was about and sort of feel detached from it all if you know what I mean? When doing quests I like to be immersed in it all and I think I've spoilt that factor by taking on quests before finishing others.

Can anyone relate to this and do you have your own rules for this kind of thing such as having a max number of open quests at a time?

Very tempted to learn from this and start a new game.

It wasn't a problem for me until I found out that there are a few bugs where you can't complete certain quests running at the same time.
Make sure you complete 'joining the stormcloaks' before you start 'season unending' or you can't complete the main quest.

Saying that I prefer to have a long list of quests to complete, I never get bored.

I'm not certain what you want with this?

I have personally no problem with the system at it is now, however, I understand that it can be overwhelming but as you said yourself, learn from it and don't accept anymore quest until you lowered the amount you already have.

I have over 20 most of the time.

What I do, open the page with all the quests listed, and do the one at the bottom until that's finished, then move to the next one at the bottom. I was where you are now a few weeks ago, and decided I needed some type of system to manage quests, and that's what I came up with.

Meanwhile, I'm not looking for additional quests, but if I get some, they just go to the top of the list. Since there's no penalty for doing quests out of sequence, or not completing quests within a time-limit, that system works best for me.

I also walk a lot, and as a result do a lot of dungeons that I find (except a few that require specific quests), and that way I keep my sanity lol.

Good luck.

I started playing without fast travel and was thinking it would be good to have quest list that could be sorted by things like proximity, then realized I could just set all my quests active and then check the map to see which quest markers were nearby (to cut down on travel time.) That wouldn't help much with feeling detached from a quest line though.

Yes, somwhat but it never really bothered me.
What i do is i set a specific goal, say i place i wanto reach or a particular quest i wanto complete and just finnish the quests that happen to be along the way or in the general area.
I never been a fan of just chasing quest objectives and just do what i feel like at the moment, if i just chase the quests it starts to feel like you're just checking of a shoppinglist and it beacomes work, rather than fun.
Don't fast travel as much and just do what feels natural or quests and dungeons you come across that peek your interest. Sure you have a questlog full of things, check them of if you happen tocome across them.

I remeber when i was about level 10ish and had finnished most of the quests around whiterun and explored much of the surounding area, i decided it was time to go see the Graybeards.
But instead of fasttraveling to Riften, where i had a companion quest to complete aswell, i decided to run to Whiterun to join the Stormcloaks and then just make my way down there.
To cut a long story short, what seemed like a fun drinking contest ended up with me getting involved in(among other things)a Markarth revolution, stealing a goat from a giant and beeing caputred by a necromancer.
I was 30 by the time i acually reached High Hrothgar and i loved every minute of it.

I agree elderjack. I'm at the same level as you...perhaps with the same quests. I think the problem is that when moving along on one quest we encounter several other quests which sometimes we can't avoid such as someone running by and handing you an item then running away, or just being curious about a cave then getting svcked into a multiple goal quest when you are trying to finish the quest you are on. I think it's great that we could be on one quest then have a small side quest; however, it's annoying when on a quest and someone wants you to go clear across the map and find an item for them. The result is we decide not to abandon our current quest which has multiple goals...which means more of these distant side-quests stack up.

Either the system needs to avoid stacking distant side-quests until the player has finished the quest they are on, or give the player the option to completely hide the side quests. When I finish the quest I'm on I look at what to do next, and the side-quest I want to do next is not easy to see...the quest title isn't what I expected and I have to spend several minutes trying to figure out if it's the quest I wanted to do. But, of course which checking out that quest I get yet another side-quest.

I started trying not to get involved in other quests, but some NPCs block my path and refuse to let me go without taking on their quest. Thankfully, some NPC dialogs include a "No Thanks...I'm busy" response...I wish I had taken advantage of that like 20 quests ago.

Also, there's some quests that I don't want to complete, but won't go away. For example I don't want to join the thieves guild or assassins or imperial guard...I don't want to join anything actual. I like being the hero with just a side-kick traveling through Skyrim rescuing maidens and beating up the bad guys and killing the ones which should already be dead.
