The only one I don't have is Hjerim in Windhelm, the bug got me on that one. Breezehome in Whiterun is the cheapest and most centrally located, though it has no manequins and only an alchemy station, if you pay for it. Honeyside in Riften and Vlindrel Hall in Markarth both can have an Alchemy station & an Enchanting station and both cost the same to buy and decorate, though Honeyside has an outdoor garden and a tanning rack to make leather. Hjerim is supposed to be the next most expensive & have an armory, which isn't an option at any other house. Proudspire Manor in Solitude is the most expensive, has 3 floors, Alchemy & Enchanting stations but not as much storage as you might expect for so much space. What's best depends on your needs, and if any have bug's that prevent your purchasing them and/or having the option to purchase them. In all cases you must perform certain task's to be able to purchase them, then have the coin to buy them and additional coin to decorate them.

I'm that player that hoards, so I need a house that has the most places you can put stuff and organize. Even seperate the stolen from the earned. So far I've only bought the house in Whiterun and in Riften. I personally like the one in Rifen the best, but I wasn't able to get the annoying housemaid Honeyside had to offer because I experienced that "return to the jarl and be deemed thane" glitch. Oh well. On another note the house in Whiterun, I killed the chick in that house cause of her annoyance, always eating my food in my room and every time I went in there, there was always someone leaving my house, as if they were hittin' it on my bed! So after I killed her, went outside, the corrier gave me a note from the jarl stating that they were sorry for the recent lose of my friend. So I took the note, went back into my house and threw the note on her body and left. Few days later her corpse wasn't there. Again, oh well. I'm working on the house in Maerkarth (however you spell it).

Also, might I add, the only way to play this game is on the Master difficulty.....all other difficulties are childsplay.

I live in Honeyside. I have to say, I have tried Markarth home, and while its cool, I dont like the city, and have never been a fan of dwarven ruins. Whiterun is to small for me. The windhelm place is not an option(bug), and the windows in the solitude home piss me off. Blindingly bright light shining through the windows 24/7? Realy bethesda? Thats what spoiled Bernious manor for me in anvil in oblivion, I would have hoped that it would have been fixed this go around.

So yes, honeysides my home. Its cozey enough, has a backdoor thats nice for some one like me who dislikes fast traveling, and it has a tanning rack. Still....

I cant help thinking that its just lacking. Im the dragonborn for Talos's sake, after defeating alduin and saving every one, I dont just think I deserve better, I feel like I've EARNED better! What Im PREYING for is a castle dlc, akin to the battlehorn castle of oblivion(except more realistic). They could even go further and give you a small town to be jarl over. I mean come on, as dragonborn, Id like to play a larger role in the political field of skyrim than just a soilder for a side, who gets nohing in return but a weapon or two and a pat on the back! A home dlc like this would be perfect!

But alas, the chances of this console player's dream of a smashingly epic home dlc is guaranteed fruitless, those days have gone to oblivion (ha, get it..get it, cause they put that kind of dlc out in oblivion  ). Unless that small chance actualy happens, I supose Ill just have to stay in my cozey little shack.

Personally, my favorite house is Markarth. I absolutely love the stone decor and it's decorated wonderfully. I also love that when you buy the alchemy/enchanting upgrades they come with a lot of materials to play around with. The view outside the house is awesome, and I just find myself loving the lore being Markarth as a city.

Whiterun is perfect as far as fast travel and smithing goes, but it's incredibely tiny and you outgrow it quickly.

I absolutely did not like the Windhelm house on my first playthrough and never plan to buy it again. I found it to be far too sparse and boring, although I think the sparcity of the house probably fits in with the Nord style? The armory upstars is pretty cool, but again, far too open and boring. Which brings me to ...

Just purchased the Riften house a little while ago with my newer character. It does not have an armory, but it has a weapon rack that is not bugged, a couple of bookshelves, and plenty of wall weapon racks. It's a perfectly homely and charming house, and I love the basemant. Of the four houses I have purchased, it has the best alchemy upgrade (as far as agents that come along with your upgrade for you to experiment with) and the enchanting upgrade is decent as well. I really like the house, although not quite as much as Markarth, but that's just a preference in taste. I probably won't bother with a garden upgrade with any subsequent purchases of the house, but it also is conveniently near the fast travel point in Riften and is reasonably close to the blacksmith in town as well.

I still have yet to purchase the Solitude house. From what I've read, there isn't much storage space and it sounded sparce as well, which would really irritate me since you end up spending so much on the house.

I'd definitely be happy with more DLC houses. Especially unique houses that fit in with their specific locations, such as the Markarth house.

Best house in Skyrim?

In my opinion, and for the following reasons...
Honeyside in Riften

Reasoning:
1. It does not force the MQ on my characters. Breezehome requires you begin the MQ.
2. It does not force any Faction questline on my characters. Hjerim requires you to choose sides in the Civil War.
3. It does not require a minimum Level. Proudspire Manor requires your character to be a minimum of Lvl20.
4. It does not require a minimum Level. Vlindrel Hall requires your character to be a minimum of Lvl20 to receive the required quest.

This leaves Honeyside.
I can purchase at any level, needs only minimal favor questing, affordable, and does not require my characters to join any faction.
Nor does if force me to begin any questline I never intend to complete.

A simple choice, really.
One person's opinion. Your mileage may vary. :read:

I like the secret Blades' hideout in Riverwood. The empty chest in there is safe. PC users can unlock the door anytime with the console. It's the best place for low level characters and it becomes accessible during the MQ (or anytime if you're a PC user ;) )

Markarth. All the Blacksmithing stuff is near to hand and it has a good amount of storage all on one lvl. I'd like to see a mod that adds a few more boxes but even without that it is fine. And I like the look.

It's no business of yours what difficulty I play on, son.

Hjerim has the most storage.

I like the Riften house best despite its small size.

I'm going to say master is kinda boring to be honest for one reason..

I like to use the environment to do damage to enemies, utilizing traps and the like, on adept, it does a good chunk of damage, on master, it barely scratches. Either difficulty, I 1 shot pretty much everything except dragons from stealth, so actual combat difficulty differences are negligible unless they actually see me (then dragons can one shot me with a breath because I'm not stacking resistances (though I will use resist pots) and my health is 100 at level 49)

I mean I like archery, it's fun, but if I see a trap set up that I can utilize to kill enemies, it adds variety and strategy to the gameplay. When I utilize the environment, I want it to actually do serious damage to them or kill them. Traps just don't scale for level much less scale for difficulty.

I ADORE the pools of "oily water" in dungeons.... let the draugr come, as long as I have a fire spell handy and am out of range of the oil slick, those undead are crispy critters!

OT - getting the mod which puts the Arcane Enchanter in Breezehome means I will never buy a house elsewhere than Whiterun on future toons....

The Markarth home looks really nice. Even if its not my favorite city, I think I'll choose that place to live. Man.. I've been playing for over 250 hours, and I've yet to buy a house.. How weird is that. :/

It's somewhat diappointing. it has less bookshelf space than Markarth, and the same amount of weapon racks/dummies as Riften I think, it lacks an alchemy satchel (that whiterun and markarth have), no display cases or even dagger display cases, and it doesn't even have a stand up wardrobe for your clothes (it's an RP thing, I know all containers are the same). Only thing I really like about it is the looks of the bed, and the safe that I keep all my jewels and gold and silver ingots and spare jewellry in, since I can't use display cases to throw in a bunch of loose precious objects in and I can't make a scrooge MacDuck swimming pool in Jordis' room the way I wanted to cause everyhing gets flung about by physics whenever I enter the cell... sooo.. safe it is.
