V-Sync

Post » Thu Dec 15, 2011 10:19 am

I turned it off (It's on by default) in my Nvidia's control panel, and now my game is running 15+ fps smoother, and my GPU isn't overheating anymore! Finally i can play without my air conditioner on.

You guys should try it out to see if it fixes any performance issues that might be happening on the PC version.

It fixes the choppiness that I occasionally experience using my AMD Radeon card, as well.

However, disabling vsynch causes graphical problems of its own, so I leave mine on.

Thankfully I'm running a steady 60 FPS with vsynch on, so this isn't an issue for me, personally.

Although, it is amusing to turn it off and watch the game rocket to the occasional 600 FPS.

I've turned V-Sync off and the screen tearing is disgusting.

I think there was a fairly major issue regarding the disabling of VSync.
If I recall correctly, time would ever so slowly go out of synch with the actual indicated time, this would eventually break certain quests.

I don't expect you to believe me on word alone, so I will be searching for the source.

Edit: "... disabling VSync also has some potentially negative impacts: you may see screen "tearing" which is harmless but may be annoying and the game world physics and timing may also accelerate or glitch, especially in areas where you get high FPS."

This is not where I first read it, but it is stated here as well. This is on the 'Advanced Tweaking' page of http://uk.geforce.com/optimise/guides/the-elder-scrolls-v-skyrim-tweak-guide guide.

This engine is seriously flawed. They forced v-sync because many gameplay aspects are framerate related.

For example the game time, quest triggers and such. This issue has been around since Oblivion. Don't know why they still can't fix this engine problem.

I tried disabling V-sync at one point but I was seeing some weird graphical anomalies. Even with it off, on max settings, my fps doesn't go much over 60 anyways, depending on what I'm looking at. Thus, I keep it on.

In some games i got 10+fps but in others significaly low 2,3+ but I havent problems with graphical anomalies yet. But always you can try disable. If you have Nvidia, turn it off in nvidia control panel (nvidia setting).
