The Kiss

Post » Tue Oct 27, 2009 8:54 pm

Have been teaching myself how to do cutscenes for my current WIP - finally managed to get the sound to work correctly in the game - (mutter mutter Microsoft codecs) - anyway just hought I'd post this as a draft - the setting is a long conversation with an NPC which has multiple choices - one of them takes the player down a possible romance path - I didn't want to script a kiss so duirng the conversation I added this in the results box it goes

PlayBink "CT_Ameliakiss.bik" 1

Here's my http://img534.imageshack.us/my.php?image=thekiss.mp4 - looks ok in game and i play on a 22 inch monitor - however I'll keep working on it now that i've started to know what i'm doing

So in dialogue i have a fade out - the video plays and you return to the dialogue - she's a little breathless and you - well you get to choose what you are

:D You should make replacements for the terrible in-game cutscenes with Azura's face :P

I feel like she kissed my nose, not my mouth.

Other than that, looks great.

My player wetting himself?
Seriously, that's one creepy skeleton you've got there Axel. :hehe:

Good idea using cutscenes Illuminiel. I don't think I've actually played a mod which uses them yet.

I need a better computer so i can render faster - but yes I am going to give it a go later

Well seeing as ingame the dialogue has you initiating the kiss and it is an awkward moment I guess hitting the nose instead of an eye is acceptable :)

Oh ... I hope so

Seriously - get a plunger and stuff into a blocked sink lift it up and down several times recording while you do so - I think you'll safely achieve the sound of all life being svcked out a living being

Rendering scenes on the fly? What am I? Bioware? :)

I have 3 possible love interests in the mod at the moment and they will all have a unique kiss and/or love scene/dream sequence - ratings yet to be approved...

Amelia's was created in Nifskope as it was the only way I could zoom in on her eyes close enough - after adding hair i took frame by frame screen captures to get the movement of her eyes closing and then mouth opening - currently I'm fiddling around between 4 different programs to mix audio, pan shots, convert to avi and then convert to bik format - it's a mess but I've finally got the bik settings right so i can hear audio in game without stuttering - now if I could only get the file size smaller without sacrificing anymore quality

Dragon Age cutscenes are created in the game (all player controls are blocked), not via biks.

It is possible to make such in MW (there is a cinematic script in MWSfD); Mr.Cellophane's approach (controlled scenes) can be simplified as well (no player interaction control, only camera movement, I did that in the past).
Some modders are using Poser for such videos (e.g. in "The Witcher").

I do not think that plunger and sink can not produce required sounds (bones, empty skull).

hmmm... try getting a few multi-sided dice and slowly roll them around your palm, record yourself breathing in gently with your mouth wide open, then mix the two together. That might do the trick.

Dice!!! In the first moment I was very exited with this suggestion but than realized a problem ? from one "side" dry bones, from another soft tissue? I will search for good dice sounds. Thank you.

To create good cutscenes in MW is not that easy (that's not Unreal). Actually, I think that proposed biks and NifScope (with some video postwork) is great idea (and I like the girl in the posted video, nose kiss is very sixy IMHO, please, do not forget technical limitations - that's not Maya or Houdini). It could be difficult to convert many MW models in Poser/DazStudio format and "endogenous" Poser models are obviously very different from MW ones.
For PC copy an NPC clone can be used. Controlled cutscenes ? la L&L require heavy sophisticated scripting. MW bad NPC path finding, transitions via Idle sequence, few animation control scripting functions, primitive not-controlled collision detection, partial animations, not properly working animation clamp with AIWander function are examples other serious obstacles.

I hope your skeleton doesn't do french kissing !

Doing cutscenes does enable interesting post production shots - it's possible to do composite shots using greenscreen techniques and I've been able to simulate the movement of textures for NPC's getting dressed or undressed - my biggest problem in game is the camera - apart from resorting to levitation I have to use console commands like ToggleCollision to get a zoom - I'd really like to work out a good rotate so I can circle an NPC smoothly

I decided on cutscenes instead of scripts - more to satisfy my own creative wants as i enjoy composition and a cutscene is a mini story in itself

I don't know why you would want to greenscreen things when you're using a computer in the first place, lol. I'd recommend checking out the free version of DAZ|Studio if you want to make cutscenes with characters, I've always had a nice time playing with it. If you want to shell out a few dollars, you can get some high quality (~2 million polys and 2048/4096 textures, I think) people and huge amounts of clothing, props, etc. I have roughly 11 gigs of Poser/DAZ resources on my HD, with skins and props to put together almost any scene. You can do some awesome animations and render them for use in MW.

I thought using DAZ resources in MW was prohibited for distributable mods? Am sure there was some major fuss about this a couple of years ago

Yeah, french kissing is absolutely possible... :shifty: , BUT... that skeleton is poorly equipped, I mean... you need a working tongue for that...

As an aside, why would the freeware ver. of DAZ be outlawed? There is no monetary gain involved.

I don't know anything about that. According to what I know of the license for Poser/DAZ content, it should be allowed (they are usually licensed for use in renders, commercial or non). Actually using the resources is obviously a Bad Idea (especially since the MW engine would choke and probably fall over dead), but as far as I know, you should be allowed to use a finished rendered video anywhere you like.

That's what I was referring to. I know full well it's possible. :P
