Save file transfer to new computer issue

Post » Tue Oct 27, 2009 5:13 pm

Sorry if this has been posted before, I really did look around for it. Tried "save, file, transfer" etc with different combination and all that in the advanced search, so again, sorry. I also apologize this is so long, I couldn't figure out a short version without the background.

Here's my predicament: My main character has about 185 hours played and is basically the ultimate bad ass. I've downloaded a few mods, my favorite being the Glenvar Castle one. If you're not familiar, you do a long 2-part quest to earn this super bad ass castle with all kinds of [censored] in it. Now I'm also a huge fan of decorating my house, whenever I go to a dungeon or house of any sort, I try and grab a little reminder to add to my house. So, when I heard Glenvar Castle has two gigantic glass display case rooms, I had special dreams that night. So I spent my time transferring all my memorabilia and then placing them in cases and on shelves etc etc.

So eventually my computer was svcking and had all this crap on it and I decided to reformat. So, having had to do a save file transfer before, I didn't think much of it. I transferred the file from the save folder in My Documents, AS WELL as the entire data/Glenvar Castle folders from the install directory and stored them on my external.

Reformatted, reinstalled Oblivion directly onto my external, and tried playing. Well, I can still load my character, and he is basically exactly how I left him, except Glenvar Castle is nonexistant and I'm missing all of the stuff that had been placed in it (was still in the process, but was about 75% through). The mod shows up in the mod/expansion/patch list and is checked. I even tried to start up the quest again but the guy never showed up.

Please understand how near-and-dear this character is to me (thankfully he seems to be normal), but there was A LOT of the rarest/most powerful/coolest looking weapons and books/documents/ingredients/jewels blah blah. It was awesome, I admit I was pretty proud of it. So please, any suggestions? I'll give you $1,000,000 friendship dollars if you can help me, and that's a promise! :D

When you re-installed Oblivion after your reformat, you'll probably have to reinstall all associated mods with that save, as well.

Well I generally tried to use only one mod at a time due to bad experiences in the past. When I was done with it, I'd uninstall it and find a new one, so there weren't any when Glenvar Castle was installed or uninstalled. There was also a patch for a Fathis Ules fix, which I have installed.

However, I also had both expansions at one point, but both of them had been stolen from me (technically lost in a move, but I'm pretty sure they were stolen), so both of those showed up in the list, yet neither were checked. They weren't even checked or installed when I had installed the Glenvar Castle mod, though they did still show up in the list.

Thanks for your suggestions so far, hopefully that provides a little more insight.

Edit: I actually forgot to mention a few critical things: Whenever I open up Oblivion and try to load the game, the picture next to the load file is of my guy standing in the glass display room at Glenvar, exactly as I left him, but when I try to load it it says something along the lines of "Save content is no longer available, some objects may not load," yet when I do, my character loads exactly how he was, though some of my items are messed up (items from the Oblivion world, not the expansions) and it's all glitchy around him. It also defaults me back to the mages guild in one of the cities, which is kind of random.

Do you have the Glenvar Castle mod installed? If you're save was done in the castle, but don't have the mod installed any longer, how can you expect the game to load your character that technically doesn't exist any longer (if Glenvar is in fact not installed). If it's not installed, you're lucky you can even load your save. Most saves like that don't even get teleported to a "defaulted" location if the game can't find the original one.

Well not to sound as rude as you, but I actually did say that I have the mod installed...a few times.

Did you remember to patch the game after reinstalling? If a mod requires the 1.2 patch (dunno if Glenvar does), it won't be loaded if the game isn't patched.

Sorry if you consider it rude, but I keep bringing up the same subject because symptom you describe sound like the symptoms of the mod not being installed properly. Do you want help? If not I'll be obliged to ignore this thread.

This to me would suggest that it is not installed or if it is, it is not installed correctly. Or it is not activated/ enabled in your Data Files in your Oblivion Launcher window.

If you reinstalled Oblivion, I wouldn't be surprised if you need to reinstall the mods as well. Simply moving them over from another drive can run into problems. If you do a reinstall, it's a good idea to reinstall all you had with it if you want it to work like you had it working. Don't just reinstall part of it.
