Skyrim = Yellowstone?

Post » Thu Dec 15, 2011 1:03 pm

I've heard of Yellowstone before, but knew nothing about it, until a BBC special started about 10 minutes ago. For those that don't know, Yellowstone is a 50 mile wide 'bowl' in the Rocky Mountains. It looks just like Skyrim.

And it has many other similarities: Wolves, Bears, Elk, Geysers, hot springs, lots of snow, mountains (duh), forests, plains, cayote(they look a little like foxes), rivers, lakes, waterfalls.

watching this show is so much like playing Skyrim that I believe the landscape was based off Yellowstone. Could I be right?

Yellowstone isn't the only place with tundra, volcanoes, hotsprings, etc. They took areas from all different experiences, with the lore of Skyrim based on a variety of things. I'm sure Skyrim is a LOT more than just a copy off of yellowstone.

I live just a few hours away and I honestly see a tiny similarity. It isn't constantly a tundra

Fair enough. I'm on the other side of the world, and have nothing even remotely like that, plus I figured (with my minimal geographical knowledge of the US) that it would be the closest of this type of landscape to where Beth is.

I actually live about 1 hour away from Yellowstone in an amazing city called Bozeman, MT. Montana in general is very much like Skyrim, you can find yourself lost in the mountains without ANYONE around for as far as the eye can see. Forests, mountains, snow storms, lakes, rivers, waterfalls, and hotsprings. Now that it is winter and we are getting snow, sometimes when i'm out and about my city reminds me so much of Skyrim.

Yellowstone itself is utterly amazing, as there are so many wild animals out there and the most beautiful sights in the world. When I stumbled across the hot pots/ hot springs in Skyrim, I immediately thought of Yellowstone.

I've been in Northern Kentucky. Now THAT place sure gives you a nice feeling like skyrim. Plenty if similaiities there.

But on topic, in sure tge map isn't necessarily based off one particular location, but many or was just brought up while the game was being developed.

I live about an hour from Yellowstone, and i can certainly see the similarity, especially in the geyser areas. On the other hand, yellowstone isn't the only place like that...but it's a cool idea, nonetheless.

We have places like that in Canada too, and I'm sure in many other parts of the world, especially northern (criteria of mountains and snow--but then there are snow capped mountains in the tropics too.)

It has that dormant supervolcano in Eastmarch like Yellowstone. The word has been in my head a few times while travelling Eastmarch. The very far west of Falkreath reminds me of Alderley Edge near me tho.

Since the Nord culture is heavly influenced by Norse culture, I believe Skyrim geography is influenced by Scandivnavia more than the US.

Can't say that i have seen a lot of volcanic tundra in scandinavia... It makes a lot more sense that they would be inspired from place in the US because gamesas is in the US and most of them haven't ever been in scandinavia . And yeah it looks a lot like yellowstone to me too.

I think its a mish mash of all those places guys. It does have an old 1000 - 1400 AD Scandinavian look to it also.

When I heard the accents I was undecided. I work in a job where I hear lots of accents including European and Asian and the Nords sound a bit more Hungarian, Polish or Serbian than Scandinavian. I work with a Norwegian man so I have a rough idea what that kind of accent is like.

your right the area south of windhelm reminds me of yellowstone. I find the area with the forsworn area reminds me of the scottish highlands.

Every county is different

Well being Scandinavian myself i can say that Skyrim might look like Scandinavia looked a 1000 years ago or so. But today, we have no locations as "untouched" as this, it looks more like Yellowstone tbh, hell bears are pretty rare and 2 decades ago Wolfs where almost extinct here, they have been coming back though. Also Geysers only really exist in Iceland not in whole Scandinavia (and technically only Norway, Sweden and Denmark is part of Scandinavia).
