Different play styles will call for different aid. As will different races.
Sword/shield builds have you up close and personal. This means you're subjected to Mage blasts and critter bites.

Personally, I prefer to use elemental/poison/disease Resist enchants rather than any skill Fortify enchants.
Examples:
1. A Nord would benefit from a Resist Fire enchant whilst Resist Frost is almost redundant. Exact opposite for a Dunmer.
2. Some races have natural Poison resistance, but others could definitely use the help.
3. All races can benefit from Resist Shock.

As stated, using Resist enchants is my personal preference for all my varied race builds.
To each their own, I suppose. Just remember; in a single player game, there is neither right nor wrong. Go with what gives you the more enjoyable experience.

For a melee character I like health leech on the weapon in the early game, it helps a lot. Having a spare with soul steal is handy so you can quickly switch and land finishing blows with it, filling your gems.

For shield, I would go with either frost or fire resist.

Yep. Me I don't do Resist Enchantments. I Fortify my main combat skills like Light Armor, 2 Handed, Sneak.

It's all in what you want your character to excel at so you have the most fun, or the least challenge, or the most challenge in the game.

Doesn't magic resist cover all bases?

So protection from frost, fire & shock?

I think so, but it will be a much lower percentage.

There also the matter of luck you can only do enchants you learn from items you DE. I have played a few characters up to 40-50 and it makes a big difference with the "what and when" enchants become available.
