Skyrim: Real Time

Post » Thu Dec 15, 2011 12:44 pm

5. A real-time clock.

As beautiful as it is to watch the sun rise and set over Tamriel, it's really immersion breaking for one hour to pass in just three minutes. If it's morning when I enter a dungeon, it shouldn't be evening when I exit 45 minutes later. It's just unrealistic. Players should at least have the OPTION of setting the clock to real time. This would be especially nice for vampires, who would like more than 36 minutes before having to shun the sunlight again.

Additionally, certain actions shouldn't happen instantaneously. A potion should take at least 5 minutes of in-game time (not play time of course) to make, and weapons and armor should take even longer.

Training is another thing that shouldn't be instant. Training should last at least a few hours of in-game time. Seriously, every time I receive training from an NPC I get the terrible specter of Keanu Reeves saying "I know kung fu" flash through my mind.

I'm keen on hearing what everyone else thinks? *hopes Bethesda is reading*

You can change your timescale to one to one if that is what you prefer.

They should make lockpicking in real time. That way the lockpicking tree would be useful, not to mention a lot more fun being a thief.

COMPLETELY UNRELATED, YET TRUE.

Breaks the quests in game and the AI.

Where ?
Proof please.
I've got 80 hours played on my Nord. I haven't seen any issues. None. Zero.

I have done "set timescale to 6". Making in-game days (24h) last 4 hours in real-time.
I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one who have done that.
I haven't heard anybody yet complain that something broke.
I think the "set timescale to" command is pretty safe.

Didn't vote. Where is the option for something inbetween where we can set the time scale to OUR preference? Maybe I want a 2:1 instead of a 1:1 or 4:1 wich I believe we are playing now. (or is it 8:1?)

What about time limits on the quests themselves: Questgiver says 'meet me here in two hours' but you come back in several days and he's still waiting. Yes or no?

If it didn't mess with quests too much I really like to run with an flexible timescale. 30x outdoors 40x riding 10x combat 15x indoors etc

I did use Real time loon ago in Oblivion land but I changed because of:

1. I want time to pass.
2. I don't want to save the word and done 100 quests in a weeks gametime!
3. A semi distance adjuster - takes "longer" to get to different places.
4. Again; I done 100 quests in a week and I am not even breaking a sweat!!!

If you read a fantasy book most things spans months, if not years, between the start and end of an incredible event. I want quests to take some in-game time, not something I solve in five minutes and then get half the kingdom.

Time is something to cherish, that's for sure; but playing in real time will break so many other "make believe" aspects.

That's just my two arrows to the knee.

Cheers!

I voted Old School because there were only two options. There should be different Ratios. BTW I'm on the XBOX so I'm sure i'm screwed in any options

2x and below breaks the game. so 3x is the slowest you could get. i would like it to be set at 10x or 5x, not 20x. that's just way to fast.

Agreed.
If you like the idea, you can discuss it in http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1308084-skyrim-skill-overhaul/ thread of mine (it has some other things too).

OT:
That would make sense in truly large and epic world like Daggerfall had, but not for Skyrim.
Still, I wouldn't mind if there was a slider in options which would allow you to set how fast time flows, so everyone can have it's own since I do think that time kinda flows too fast (I would personally set it to 6 min = 1h).

I get the realistic aspect of time, wanting things to take longer instead of it being instantaneous. From a gameplay standpoint, I really don't want to have to wait that long before reaping the benefits. Waiting hours to craft or train is superfluous and would defeat the purpose of these professions. Why would I want to sit around doing nothing when I could be out enjoying the game, and possibly even obtaining these special items I'm wasting away trying to craft?

There really has to be more of a fundamental reason other than 'roleplaying' purposes. I just pretend I spend an entire day, in game time, creating items and that suits my style just fine. If you want things to take an incredible amount of time, I am sure you'll be able to mod it. But for it to come standard in the game, I don't think it would be a good idea at all, especially for those who aren't interested in rolepaly, or who don't have a lot of free time to devote to a video game.

Though I do agree, I think a setting to adjust the in-game time to real-life would be awesome.

It really makes no sense that you could go around the entire continent in 1 in-game hour.
For me, it is more realistic that the in-game is faster.

Realism is not about everything being the same as real life, it will never will, because this is a game

Realism is about in-game elements make sense between them.

Hmm, I don't mind it in my MMOS but as far as single player RPGS go, I just want to have fun and not have to waste time waiting for 7 hours just so I can go exploring in the dark.

I don't think a real-time clock would fit with Skyrim's scaled-down world. If they want to implement a real-time clock, then I think that clock should control a world that is also of a real scale.

In oblivion as a vampire i ALWAYS slowed down the clock, it just wasn't enough night-time to get anywhere. Oblivion was at 30x, i usually took it down to 10x, which seemed a lot more "right" to me.
