Mystery of the Ebony Blade

Post » Thu Dec 15, 2011 8:00 pm

Together with Ebony Greatsword, Ebony Blade is one of best looking swords I've ever seen!
The reason for that is because whenever I tried to think of a perfect sword, my thoughts always led me to something which looked ether like Ebony Greatsword or Ebony Balde.
You can imagine my surprise and joy when I saw them both in the game.
I just want to congratulate to designer(s) of those two swords since you simply left me speechless when I saw them. :)

Anyway, that being said, let's get to the real point of this thread.
A lot of people may know that Ebony Blade is really strange blade.
It is a two-handed weapon, and using it improves your Two-Handed Weapons skill, yet it benefits from Armsman perk from One-Handed Weapons skill.
Like that wasn't weird enough, it seems (but I still have to confirm it) that it benefits from Devastating Blow perk, a perk from Two-Handed Weapons skill.
On top of that, it can't be upgraded.

Now, these all may seem to be mistakes on Bethesda's part, but are they really mistakes, or are they just a prank?
If you read the book, which you can find on table next to the Ebony Blade, you'll notice that it mentions that lot of people end up looking like crazed people who talk to bunnies and something like that (basically, it implies that it drives you insane).
This could strongly imply that Ebony Blade's weird behavior is actually made by Bethesda on purpose to - yes - piss us off!
And about it being unable to get upgraded, I think that it's because they wanted to prevent it from becoming too good.
Remember that Life Drain effect from Ebony Blade actually doesn't heal you for 10-30 HP, but actually steals that HP from the enemy, meaning that enemy loses 10-30 additional HP from the drain.
To put it simply, Life Drains adds additional 10-30 damage to the blade, instead of just being a mean of healing (at least that's why I got based on tests I made).

Anyway, what is your opinion on all this?
Is this a prank, or a mistake?
Also, even if it was a prank, would you like Bethesda to ''fix'' it and turn it into a proper two-handed weapon?
You can also tell if you would like something changed about the blade or not.
Basically, talk about anything related to the Ebony Blade!

Discuss!

My opinion:
I personally think that there is a fair chance that the blade is screwed on purpose by Bethesda, but would still prefer that it gets ''fixed'' so that it's a proper two-handed weapon.
I also think that it should be upgradable since you can still make a much better sword than Ebony Blade is (it's only actual advantage and what makes it special is it's unlimited charges).
Also, is it me or does Friendly Fire effect from the blade does not work?
I've tried using it on my friends, but they still kinda objected the idea of me killing their faces.
Still, I think that the concept of undetected attacks is pretty sweet and should be completely taken from the blade and given to Blade of Woe and let it replace that petty life stealing attack (kinda seems more fitting).
Of course, it should be made so that no matter if your victim is a friend or foe (and not just friends), it does not notice when you attack it with the Blade of Woe (or just make it much harder to notice - maybe make a % chance that victim does not notice the attack when attacked with Blade of Woe, or something like that).

I'm of the opinion that wonky game mechanics are a poor way to show that our character's head is being messed with. If they want to show this, then they should make something that affects the character, not the player that is playing them.

It's actually my favorite Greatsword in the game despite it's "problems". I love how it looks when i use the sword and the Nightingale Armor :)

The artifact? The Ebony Blade. Not an ebony blade.

I really hope that it's bugged and not intentional, it's the only "special" two handed sword in the game.

Probably a little joke, and I kinda like it.

Besides, I can get more powerful absorb health from alchemy + enchanting.

So true.

Similar here.
That's why I think it would be good if they fix the balde.

It's actually my favorite Greatsword in the game despite it's "problems". I love how it looks when i use the sword and the Nightingale Armor :)

To me, it's on par with Ebony Greatsword.
I really can't decide which one I like more.

I can upgrade my ebony sword....

There is a difference:

I really hope that it's bugged and not intentional, it's the only "special" two handed sword in the game.

And that they fix it soon!

Probably a little joke, and I kinda like it.

Besides, I can get more powerful absorb health from alchemy + enchanting.

I don't think that TES is about just getting the biggest numbers.

Same with the Headsman's Axe.

Well, that makes me believe that it's just a mistake on their part.

Yes, that is what I meant.
I like the ebony blade, I think its quirks are a unique thing in a game world that really needs more unique things, and I dont really care about its enchantments.
Its something nice to put on a weapon display for me.

i acutally think the ebony blade was planned as a onehanded sword. why?

because ALL signs lead to this beeing the case.

the sword is nearly the same size as dragonsbane. e.g. too small for a 2handed weapon

the sword gets onehanded entchants and perks bonuses.

the base damage of the weapon is way more likely fitting a onehanded sword since its damage is even lower than a deadric ONE handed sword very very weak for a 2hander.

the swing speed is like a onehanded weapon.

it was a one handed sword in ALL previeus games.

the upgrade thing clearly is a bug since some other weapons suffer from the same issue while still having normal entchants.

i think this thing has only one little bug which is way way more likely than having three or four bugs at once on the same item:
those who used the cs for morrowind or oblivion may know HOW EASY it was to switch a weapon type from one to two handed and back. a simple MISSCLICK done by a dev could have chosed the ebony blade to become 2handed instead of 1handed. and THIS szenario is much much more likely than all the other things at once. think about it.

I'm not using it, but I do keep all my "special" weapons. I've found this to add to the list of "quirks" - will NOT activate into a weapons rack, plaque or other display type mounting. I have tried to hang it on my walls to display it (as i do with all unique items) and it just falls on the floor, as if refusing to be seen by anyone but me.

Also did anyone else find this quest a little disturbing?

Edit: as far as this item having "intentional" problems, I believe it is possible given the story of the blade and that Bethesda also has put other items in the game that aren't so innocent. I don't want to say which due to possible spoilers, but I have found another item which I've heard was placed out of spite.

You actually have a good point there.
Now, when I think about it, I remember that in case you wield Ebony Blade while transforming into a werewolf, it will turn into a one-handed weapon and you will have it's scarab on your side when the transformation is over.
Basically, you end up being a one-handed Ebony Blade wielding werewolf.

I'm not using it, but I do keep all my "special" weapons. I've found this to add to the list of "quirks" - will NOT activate into a weapons rack, plaque or other display type mounting. Yeah, that's clearly a bug.
I heard about it more than once.

Mind sharing, but putting it in spoiler tags?
I'm actually interested.

I like that part about "talks to bunnies". They should have it where you actually can talk to bunnies after you have wielded this sword long enough.

Bunny: "YOU! YOU KILLED MY MOTHER"
