Any reason not to do both?

Because I find it a bit strange personnaly to join both, it would make my character to much a mess I guess... unless someone knows a good loophole..

You could join both if you don't despise Maven Black-Briar. It's annoying that you can't kill her.

There is a loophole... She's called Maven, and she's in both guilds.

How is she involved with the Dark Brotherhood?
I don't remember encountering her anywhere apart from Riften

What's the loophole then besides that someone else is member of both..

BTW I thought Maven only was a client of the DB not an actual assassin?

It seems to me that Riften is kinda "her town" since people are afraid to actually do something about it, and they mention her during the introduction to the city, and basically tell you not to mess with her because she's part of both. I haven't talked to her in super long, prior to actually joining and completing the dark brotherhood myself, so I can't say for sure that she was actually a member (like she'd address you as guild master?) or if those were just rumors made to keep people afraid or something. Searching for power where one can get it - what's worse than an assassin and thief? A corrupt guard? The only problem I see with combining all three is, in skyrim (as opposed to morrowind), the legion is an actual war guild, not guard guild... hmm.

I'm quiet certain she's just a client who threatens people with sending the DB instead of being actually a member herself.

It is possible. I don't remember it word-by-word either, sadly, but there are a couple of references throughout.

but as the spoiler says, you basically cannot be Imperial if you are DB

You can be because
Spoiler
supporting the Empire doesn't mean supporting the Emperor.
;)

This is how it is!

Regarding QuestItems:

Nightingale Armor is a good set, but I like the DB Armor and the followers you get by completing the DB better. ;)

Well that's because she isn't "involved" directly per say.

Spoiler
She's not actually in the DB, she just performs the black sacrament so often that she happens to be well known in the DB; the idea that she is a member is actually wrong. For example: if she was a member of the DB, she wouldn't have a need for the black sacrament in her basemant, now would she? Would make absolutely no sense.

That makes sense,
Also You COULD justify your actions on the Katariah by looking at a list of Roman Emperors.

If you're really role-playing a character joining the Thieves Guild won't necessarily make you "evil" but joining the DB shoots your alignment into "bad guy" and people will react to that.

I liked both guilds quite a bit, but of the two I would choose DB by the slightest margin.

Dark Brotherhoods better and if you invest in the speech perks then the Thieves guild is useless.
