Why won't Fallout 3 work on Windows 7?

Post » Fri Oct 30, 2009 3:22 am

So I had Fallout 3 at launch and I had XP then and it worked fine. I never had a single problem with it. Now I have Windows 7 64-bit and the game just flat out stops working every 10 seconds. It's completely unplayable. I have tried EVERY SINGLE fix I can find on the internet and NOTHING works. I've downloaded a supposed fix via torrent, I've messed with the .ini files, I downloaded a .dll file that was supposed to fix it, nothing works. So I have a few questions. The first is, does ANYONE know of ANY fixes that actually work?

The second is... What the [censored] Bethesda? Seriously? The internet is aflame with people decrying the fact that the game simply won't work on 7 and the best you give us is a simple "This game is not supported on Windows 7" in your FAQ. I bought your [censored] product, I have a system that should by all accounts easily be able to run the damn thing (because it did perfectly fine before), why the [censored] won't you provide support for this? You're just losing customers.

I have W7 64-bit works perfectly. My guess is that you have installed it into a Program folder of some sort. Reinstall it into C:/Games or what ever

Umm... no. Addendum: hell no. It's installed into it's own folder that's not on the OS's hard drive. That's how all of my games are because they work better that way.

I am at a loss with so many people having problems with Windows 7 playing this game. I have Win7-64bit and installed the game and it started up instantly. I have experienced none of the stability issues. I completed the game with less than 4 crashes. 2 of them caused by mods. Not sure why some people have so many problems. I concur, post a dxdiag.

You have a somewhat large page file used, it should be about 800MB used on a clean boot. Try to run the game in a clean boot to see if there is a background task causing it to crash. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310353

Firstly. You have to understand that Fallout came out before Win7, so they are not obligated to support it. If it works, it works. If not, then it doesn't. Tough. You can't expect Blizzard to make sure Diablo works on Win7. That would just be stupid and unreasonable. Developers had more important things to do, such as working on their next game which WILL support the new OS, have many more bug fixes, and just overall work better then their previous game. Personal experience show this to be true.

Secondly. Also understand that Win7 has had many internal changes over Vista, and in turn, Vista was a complete rewrite over XP, so those internal changes can greatly impact a programs stability. The only reason a program will crash is when it is not getting something it needs to continue running. So it is very likely that Fallout is asking for something that Win7 can not provide. In which case, Bethesda may be unable to even fix even if they wanted to. That thing that Fallout needs might be something that the game can not work without, no matter what. This being the case, there is nothing Bethesda can do about it. Period.

Thirdly. There are MANY factors that goes into a programs stability. Most prominent of which are your own Hardware/Driver concoction that makes up your computer. Sometimes things just don't work together, and no amount of tweaking will make them agree and play nice. This is one of those facts of computers you must accept.

So what ever the reason, some people just have to accept thet they can't get the game to work on their computer. For me, Fallout has been working like a well polished charm on Win7 over XP (~15+ FPS).

The same can be said for a lot of developers, and while no they do not have an obligation, it's considered intelligent business practice. Take Blizzard for example. They released Starcraft in 1998. Windows XP was released in 2001. The last patch that came out for Starcraft? 2006. As for Bethesda, well they currently aren't really working on anything that anyone is aware of. They are PUBLISHING a number of games, but that's only because their parent company recently bought a number of developers who were already working on things.

As far as Windows 7 goes, apparently you and a number of other people's experiences prove that it SHOULD work on Win 7 no problem (for me at least), but it does not. And I can guarantee that it has nothing to do with my system or drivers because I'm using the exact same setup I had when I had XP. And when I had XP the game worked like a charm.

Finally, I'm asking for help here because I simply can't get it to work. If you have no help to offer, please don't even bother to post. Trying to scold someone for little or no reason is not appreciated.

1. Todd Howard said they have been working on their next project since Fallout was first released. What it is is still unknown, but the Gamebryo engine being their primary, they are undoubtedly making engine upgrades and fixes.

2. You apparently don't know much about computers. Otherwise you would understand driver conflicts. Windows 7 =/= Windows XP. They are vastly different operating systems. What once worked on XP does not mean it will work on Win7.

3. You may have to accept that given your system build, the game will not work. It happens. It has happened to me with past games. Given the influx of Win7 related threads, I wouldn't be surprised if this is true.

Obviously though, best of luck getting it to work. You might try dual-booting XP so you can play it.

2. The game was built for both XP AND Vista. Considering Windows 7 is more or less a streamlined version of Vista, there should not be any driver conflicts. I was a computer science major and I've been building my own computers for about 10 years now, I know what I'm talking about.

The game runs very well for me on both Vista 64-bit SP2 and Windows 7 64-bit. I've had occasional crashes, but I expect that. I have never played it on XP, so I wouldn't know. No one is talking down to you.

PC gaming really does require patience. You have to really make sure that drivers & hardware work good together. You have to try to make sure there aren't any background task that are crashing the game. Even ad-ware and viruses can cause slow downs and bad performances. Try defragging the hard drive, or running a disk cleanup. If you upgraded from XP to Windows 7, that may even be the problem, and may have to do a clean install.

For the most part, as a PC Gamer, you have to accept some responsibility here. Bethesda cannot diagnose every PC setup. It is just not possible. With the PS3/Xbox 360, the hardware is the same, so it is easy to find problems and fix them.

Just run through this checklist
1. Defrag/Disk Cleanup
2. Clean Boot
3. Virus/ad-ware scan
4. Driver problems.
5. Running game in safe-mode or windowed mode.
6. Disabling Mods.
7. Try disabling codecs to determine if one is affecting these crashes

I've already tried everything you listed. If you had read the rest of this you would know that I have tried everything I can think of. Defrags, safe mode, codecs, messing with .dll files, drivers, etc. I've looked at ALL of it. All of my other games run just fine, some of which are far older than Fallout 3. There is nothing wrong with my setup, it's been the same for over a year, and I keep this computer defragged and spotless from adware and viruses. I even go so far as to defrag the memory. I also don't mod the game.

And I'm not asking Bethesda to diagnose every setup, I'm wishing they would bother to take the time to provide support for a problem that thousands of people are currently having and have been having for a WHILE. Valve does it, Blizzard does it, a lot of companies do it. It does nothing for them to blatantly ignore something that is very obviously a big issue for a LOT of people.

You don't understand how businesses work then. They make no money from supporting anything. Bethesda only makes money from developing and publishing where as Blizzard has WoW making over $500million a month, and Valve has Steam. If Bethesda isn't developing, they can not get their next title, with fewer bugs and better compatibility out to the people. It is a balancing act. How much support can they give before it becomes cost-inhibitive. If they sat around and tried to support each and every problem, they would never get anywhere and eventually go out of business.

Not to mention the statistics. A few thousand people having problems and several million running just fine. Hmm. If it weren't your system, then why is the game crashing? As I said before, a program will only crash when it is not getting something it needs to run.

I had a similar issue with Fallout 3. It ran perfectly on Win XP but wasn't playable at all on Win 7, even though I was dual booting off the same system. Eventually a Win 7 driver update fixed things and it runs fine now. There's really nothing you can do besides dual boot or buy new hardware. As long as Bethesda keeps using Gamebryo, their games will continue to be bug ridden, glitchy messes.

Hmm... well technically because of the copy of Windows 7 I got I HAVE to dual boot. It's an upgrade version I got for dirt cheap so XP has to be on here for it to run. I guess I'll just install it on XP and run it that way, kind of a pain though. Thanks for the info.

I don't really understand how you think here. If the driver fixed it, wasn't it the driver's fault for being faulty? What does Gamebryo have to do with it?

I have to agree both sides of the issue but under Vista I used to get a crash off and on complaining about Video Driver game was playable and could never find the right updated driver

New Computer now running Win7 took forever to install but did and it starts but each time leaving the birthday party or getting to the reactor area it dies each time comes up not responding

Can anyone tell me when Fallout Las Vegas comes out with it be a standalone game or an add on?

Thanks all for any info

Yeah whenever I try to talk to... Mr. whatshisname, the guy who wants to blow up Megaton, it just stops responding on me. Doesn't complain about anything, just flat out stops.

And New Vegas is going to be a standalone game, set 3 years in the future with no recurring characters. It's not actually Bethesda who's working on it, it's Obsidian Entertainment. Though a lot of the development team did both Fallout 1 and 2.

I have just got a new PC - Dell XPS with Intel I7 920, ATI 4850 running Win 7

I had a few CTD issued, but i tried the Quad core ini fix and now it seems to be running ok

Just out of interest have you tried installing the game on the same HD as the OS? I know that is not how you want to have it set up, but if it works....

Even if the game is behaving with the drivers and hardware (which is very flaky and incompatible, as the support forums can attest), the further you play the game, the more likely it will start crashing and running into game breaking bugs. The only way to make the game marginally stable is run the unofficial fallout patch which fixes hundreds of bugs that Bethesda has never addressed. Gamebryo simply can't handle the aggressive non-linear scripting and open ended game code without imploding on itself eventually. Even the console versions are rife with crashes.

Also note that while I technically got the game to run on Win 7 after a driver update, I didn't actually attempt to play the tutorial. For all I know it could still hang at some point in the game similar to the many complaints on this forum.

There is not a big difference between Vista and Win 7. Claiming such just exposes a persons ignorance. There was a big jump from 98 to XP, and another big jump from XP to Vista, but not Vista to Win 7. If it runs on Vista it will almost certainly run on Win 7.
