Skyrim won Game of the Year question is does it deserve it?

Post » Fri Dec 16, 2011 4:38 am

I know. A terrible thing these forums. Everything biased in favor of the game. My life is quite fun, actually. Every once in a while I like to express my discontent for a product I paid good money for and was terribly disappointed by.

I fail to see how your logic works at all, if you knew the trend was there, why buy the next games?

The game is bugged and lacking in quests.

Though I agree the content is much less that previous titles, what game out there beats it in terms of content/$, name just one?

P.S.

"Beats"? Hell, even comes close.....

Yes, Morrowind should be 2011's GOTY. Wait, no.

Guess I should have been more clear.

.....excluding other Bethesda titles.

Morrowind was not in the running for GOTY......or even eligible. Think games this year....

Portal 2 should have one GOTY. It's a matter of quality over quantity, and Portal 2 is 100% quality.

Even Skyward Sword deserved GOTY more than Skyrim.

My console got a red ring playing COD4.

COD4 broke my Xbox!!! Guys it's Infinity Wards fault!

My Xbox red ringed 3 days before battlefield 3 came out. After sending it in to get fixed, I got it back the day before Skyrim was released.

I'll stick my neck out and say Skyrim is the best game of all time. My opinion is mine.

well lets see people are complaining that there PS3/Xbox360,PC are or will have malfunctions that will force a reboot or a new hard drive depending on the system that is being used

Right, because Skyrim is the only game that has ever had technical issues this year. I see. Got it.

Also, I quit watching the VGAs about halfway through, but I did watch when Skyrim was announced as a GOTY nominee. I remember Zachary Levi saying something like: "Skyrim has a world that constantly reacts to the player, and it has awesome combat." Seriously? Skyrim barely reacts to player actions at all, and the combat is definitely not awesome: the combat is terrible. Then they had a damn pyrotechnics display after they showed a video for Skyrim, and at that point I had no doubt in my mind what game would win GOTY.

Well, I think these contests are kind of dumb, but my GOTY would without a doubt be The Witcher 2.

Funny to see when every new game is made there is always people that complain.
And i agree sure it has some flaws ^^ But cmon! its an elder scrolls game! That make me care less about the flaws and bugs.
Skyrim deserves GOTY.But sure there was some amazing games this year :)

I agree, your immersion in the game is constantly broken by NPCs reacting stupidly and not reacting at all, and you barely have any affect on the quests, even though you're given dialogue options there's no real freedom of choice.

At the end of the day you either kill someone to end a quest or fetch something. Pretty simple, and not dressed up well either. Other games can disguise this simple mechanic, but Skyrim seemingly wears it on its sleeve.

Of course its GOTY, people put 100s of hours into this game PER TOON. No other game can say that.
You take a game like Uncharted 3 for example, yes its an amazing game but after 20 hours, you are done and there is zero replay.

TES always have tons of replay and you can put in 100s of hours easily

GOTY doesnt mean crap anymore, if it ever did... Its a popularity contest. People don't vote for the best game, they vote for the flashiest and the most hyped, or to prove a point.

Sorry, but if Skyrim is very fun, it is not a quality game. It is EXTREMELY bugged (gamebreakingly so for a lot of players including an entire platform), very shallow in both storyline and gameplay and fails to provide any challenge whatsoever starting in the mid 30, with just about any type of combat-related build, even on Master.

Now don't get me wrong, I adore Skyrim. The graphics and environment are extremely well made, and very detailed/complexe. The game itself can be very entertaining and exploring alone gave me enough hours of enjoyment that i'm happy payin for it.

But if the world is amazingly beautifull, it is also empty of anything of substance. This is not a GOTY game. It just happens to have a very popular IP and no competition. To truely be a quality game, it would need to be a tested and polished product. As it is, this is a live Beta.

Of course its GOTY, people put 100s of hours into this game PER TOON. No other game can say that.

I spent over 6000 hours pretending I was an indian in the woods when I was a kid. Does that mean its a great quality game? Quantity =/= quality

I remember Zachary Levi saying something like: "Skyrim has a world that constantly reacts to the player, and it has awesome combat." Seriously? Skyrim barely reacts to player actions at all, and the combat is definitely not awesome: the combat is terrible.

In all fairness, it does try to react to players. I'll give some examples:

- leveled enchanting? "My dull old sword sure can use an enchant!"
- leveled alchemy? "Oh you're an alchemist. I could never get the hang of that."
- leveled conjuration? "Can you conjure up a warm bed for me?"
- leveled destruction? "Destruction's magic is fine. Just don't go around burning anything."
- leveled pickpocket? "Keep your hands to yourself or we're going to have a real problem."
- joined Dark Brotherhood? "Psst. I know who you are. Hail Sithis."

If you've restored the Thieves Guild in the 5 holds you will find various random thieves going around trying to steal things in Riverwood, Riften etc. When you kill dragons everyone gathers around the dragon corpse and goes, "wow I've never seen anything like that!" or "You absorbed its soul!".

However, there is is this question, how in Soverngade does every damn citizen and guard know my trade?

Hello, is it my clothes? I'm dressed like a bandit or Stormcloak officer! Which part of that gives away what I've spent my time doing? A deadric greataxe can be visibily seen across my back, my toon is dressed like a Dremora/Deadra Lord in deadric gear and no one gets all jumpy? You regular farmers, alchemists, Imperials, Stormcloaks and blacksmiths get visited by Azura, Sanguine and the entire dysfunctional family every 3rd of the month for dinner? I'm not wearing Shrouded gear, so how did you know I've joined the Dark Brotherhood? What breaks immersion is those random thieves can tell you to watch it - regardless of your contributions to the Thieves Guild or if you made guild master. Does a lowly thief talk to Vex or Tonila that way? The good folks at Riverwood can be found strolling idlely or resting their arms on the fences as a dragon is hovering above them, screaming loudly. Only when it lands and attacks do they start reacting.

I agree though, these awards are just a popularity contest. Few are concerned with the merits of the award, only that it won.
